Power Loss
By Melvin Long
POWER OUTPUT
of a tractorenginecande- creasegraduallywithuse. Oftenthisprocess goes unnoticed, especially if the tractor is being usedon
part-loadjobs.However, when
onceagain placedunderfullload, thislong-developingcondi- tionbecomes
apparent.Cause
ofthisdifficulty ismore
troublesometo locate than is a conditionwhich
prevents the tractorfrom
running at all.However,
a careful systematic check of tractorcomponents
usually pinpoints the cause.Sometimes
the cure is rela- tivelyeasyandsimple. In other cases, the services of your dealermay
be required.Here
is a step- by-step checkyou
canmake:
1.Fuel cap must be opened for proper operation ofthe fuel pump. Plugged ventscanbeopenedwitha finewireor bywashing the cap insolvent and blowing cleanwith com- pressed air.
2. Fuel filter must be clean enough to permit flow of adequatefuelsupply.Check operator'smanualforinstructions on cleaningfilter onyourtractor. Ifthe fuel lineis opened on dieseltractors, thefuel-supplysystem may requirebleed- ingoftheairtorestore proper operation.
3. Governor linkage adjustment determines engine speed inrelationtosetting ofhandthrottle.Refertoowner'smanual fordetails ofadjustinggovernorlinkage toobtainratedengine speed.
4.Fuel viscosity affects performance ofdiesel engine in- jection pump. Fuel with too low viscosity (toothin) causes the pump toslip. Usea fuelwithhigherviscosity torestore normal operation.
5. Clogged muffler chokes flow of exhaust gases from engine. Check muffler conditionbyremoving the muffler and observing effect upon engine performance. If it improves greatly, themufflershould bereplaced.
6.Airpre-cleanerisintendedtokeeplarge piecesoftrash from entering the air cleaner itself. However, if this trash builds up onthescreen, it can choke offflowofairtothe engine.
7.Aircleanermustbe abletohandle adequate flowofair for satisfactory burningofthe fuel. Contaminants collect in the oil cup whenever the engine is running. Ifthe build-up becomes great enough, the engine is choked and cannot developfullpoweroutput.
8. Engine temperature must be in the normal operating rangeforgood performance. Below-normal temperatures which result from operating the tractor without a thermostat in- crease engine wear, inadditiontoreducingpoweroutput.
9.Valve clearance and condition must be right forgood compression. Burned valves need grinding and perhaps re- placement, but clearance can be easily adjusted. Correct adjustments contribute to longer valve life in addition to helpingpower output.
10. A slipping clutch wastes engine power and causes damagingoverheating. Clutchlinkage free playdecreaseswith clutchwear. Thus, the linkagemustbeadjusted occasionally to restorethe necessaryfree play.
