paler in dorsal color.The

paler. Itmay
be that these represent anew
subspecies but until theamount
of variation, indi- vidual, sexual,and

I feel that it is best to refer these to margarettae as being indicative of then- nearest relationship.There
are certain peculiarities oftheskull of thetwo
speciesaquilusand
sikapusi thatmay
be of significance in determining the species.In the latter there is a
pronounced bony
tuberosity at the posterior end of thebony
palatewhich
ismarked
inimmatm-es and becomes
progressivelymore
noticeable as the animal ages. This tuberosityis inconspicuous in
young
specimens of aquilusand
in adulthoodis about as in
young
of sikapusi. In addition, the sculpturing along thelateralmarginsofthe palateismore pronounced
atallagelevelsin sikapusiand
the posterior palatine foramina are, in general, longerand more open
than in aquilus. This sizeand
shape of the pos- terior palatine foramina in certain instancesshows
an overlap, so the degree of usefulness is questionable.However,
combining the color of thedorsum and
the cranial features as outlinedabove
asweU
as under the remarks section for sikapusi pyrrhus, the animalsfrom
theSudan

This species is difficult to distinguishfrom
L. aquilus in all of the specimens examined. In general, sikapusi is darker in color than is aquilus. In addition to the darker dorsal color, the ratiobetween
the width of the anterior ends of the auditory bullaeand
the width of the posterior choanae averages about 60 percent,which means
that the choanae are narrower in proportion to the spacebetween
the bullae. Thissame
ratio in aquilus is inthe neigh-borhood
of SO percent.The
coloration of the belly is extremely variable in both speciesand
apparently is no criterion for sepai-ating thetwo
kinds.The amount
of cranial variationbetween
individuals of thetwo
species is so great that only averages
may

specimens varysomewhat from
the typeseries of hystrella in that they present a slightlyredder appearance. Thismay
