To first principles then and to define the scope of the electronic resources remit that we are dealing with. For the purposes of this chapter I have used those that have been defined in recent UKSG and Facet publications (UKSG 2007a; Lee and Boyle 2004). This is a pragmatic decision as much time could be spent debating D WD[RQRP\ WKDW FRXOG EH DGRSWHG 7KLV HODVWLFLW\ RI GHILQLWLRQ LV LQGLFDWLYH RI WKH EUHDGWK RI WKH DUHD DQG WKH GLYHUVLW\ RI VNLOOV GXWLHV DQG UHVSRQVLELOLWLHV WKDWLQVWLWXWLRQVH[SHFWIURPWKHLUHOHFWURQLFUHVRXUFHVSUDFWLWLRQHUV+RZHYHU there are generic themes traversing the management of the electronic resource SRUWIROLR ZKLFK ZLOO FUHDWH D VXLWH RI WUDQVIHUDEOH VNLOOV 7KHUH ZLOO EH SHFXOLDU issues and challenges, and thus training needs, for each of the core specific types;
IRUH[DPSOHGDWDVHWVIXOOWH[WGDWDEDVHVHMRXUQDOHERRNVDQGVRRQDQGWKH attendant technologies that surround them.
ANALYSIS OF TRAINING NEEDS
7KHSDUDPHWHUVRIWKHHOHFWURQLFUHVRXUFHODQGVFDSHDUHÀXLGDQGPD\YDU\IURP LQVWLWXWLRQ WR LQVWLWXWLRQ :H RQO\ KDYH WR ORRN DW WKH SOHWKRUD RI MRE WLWOHV WKDW abound in this area, and the variety of ‘homes’ within institutions’ organizational VWUXFWXUHV WKDW HOHFWURQLF UHVRXUFHV VWDII ¿QG WKHPVHOYHV WR DSSUHFLDWH WKH developing nature of this area.
As with any training programme, one needs to define what the core competencies are for that area. One must also consider whether the organization/department has a commitment to promote career progression and staff development, indeed what DUHWKHLQVWLWXWLRQ¶VYDOXHV",IHHOWKDWLQDQ\HPHUJLQJDUHDDQGWKHUHPD\EHPXFK debate whether electronic resources have ‘emerged’ – but we should best leave that to other fora) the proactive support and opportunities for career progression and development are even more critical to the enrichment and progress of the library LQ WKH ZLGHU FRQWH[W +RZ WKH RUJDQL]DWLRQ GHDOV ZLWK WKHVH LVVXHV ZLOO LPSDFW on the ‘buy in’ from the staff. For instance, if new specialist staff are recruited RQVKRUWWHUPIL[HGFRQWUDFWVWKHQWKLVµERXJKWLQ¶H[SHUWLVHDQGVNLOOVEDVHZLOO need to be shared and cascaded to the established staff posts. )RUH[LVWLQJOLEUDU\VWDIIWKHLUPRYHWRWKHHOHFWURQLFUHVRXUFHVDUHDPD\EHDQ organic, gradual transition during which time they have developed confidence and VNLOOV UHVXOWLQJ LQ D SRVLWLYH DQG UHZDUGLQJ H[SHULHQFH +RZHYHU WKHUH ZLOO EH instances when the move to dealing with, or managing, some aspect of electronic resources may have been thrust upon them, which may affect their motivation DQGFRQILGHQFH6RWKHWHDPPHPEHUVWDVNHGZLWKPDQDJLQJHOHFWURQLFUHVRXUFHV PD\ EH IURP GLYHUVH SURIHVVLRQDO DQG RSHUDWLRQDO EDFNJURXQGV IRU H[DPSOH reader services, systems, technical services, but they may also have different DVSLUDWLRQVH[SHFWDWLRQVDQGH[SHULHQFHV7KHVHYDULDWLRQVPD\OHDGWRWHQVLRQV DQG PLVXQGHUVWDQGLQJV RQFH WKH\ ILQG WKHPVHOYHV ZRUNLQJ WRJHWKHU FORVHO\
in a new team or unit. Another scenario to consider is that there may not always be a centralized dedicated electronic resources team, but rather a range of staff distributed across various established teams which deal with overlapping components of the jigsaw. This second scenario will inevitably mean that the softer VNLOOVVHWRIFRPPXQLFDWLRQDQGQHJRWLDWLQJZLOOEHPRUHLPSRUWDQWWRHQVXUHWKDW there is cross-team co-operation and collaboration. I would suggest that the two scenarios throw up different priorities for the training needs, particularly in the VRIWHUVLGHRIWKHVNLOOVVHW
7KHIROORZLQJLVDJHQHUDOOLVWRIVRPHRIWKHVNLOOVH[SHULHQFHDQGFRPSHWHQFLHV WKDWOLEUDU\DQGLQIRUPDWLRQVHUYLFHVVWDIIZRXOGQHHGIRUZRUNLQJLQWKHHOHFWURQLF resources area within the emerging digital campus. I have not attempted to HDUPDUNWKHPLQWRGLIIHUHQWW\SHVRIOLEUDU\VWDIIIRUH[DPSOHSURIHVVLRQDOSDUD professional, administrative, and so on, as there is often disparity between levels of UHVSRQVLELOLW\DQGGXWLHVWKDWLQVWLWXWLRQVRUJDQL]DWLRQVH[SHFWIURPVLPLODUJUDGHV of staff. I would hope that most of these would be required across all sectors of the information world.

There are broadly two aspects to training. To that end I would suggest that there is no such thing as the consummate electronic resources librarian/manager. As we are dealing with a dynamic area, then development and opportunities for professional growth and training need to

‘purpose’ referred to earlier may well change when the department or the home organization’s strategic direction or imperatives change. In the UK there has been, and continues to be, ongoing changes affecting the HE sector which will inevitably KDYH D NQRFNRQ HIIHFW RQ WKH H[SHFWDWLRQV RI DOO VWDNHKROGHUV ZLWKLQ OHDUQLQJ organizations.
It is essential that even if the content of any training event or course is on target, the level must also be appropriate for the potential trainee as well. If it is not, then you may hinder the person’s development rather than contribute to it. The UKSG conference is usually spread over three days and whilst this is an appreciable time for a staff member to be out of the library, the positive gains IURPDWWHQGLQJVKRXOGQRWEHXQGHUHVWLPDWHG$QLPSRUWDQWWRROLQDQ\ZRUNLQJ OLIHLVWKHLQIRUPDOSURIHVVLRQDOQHWZRUNWKDWLVEXLOWXSRYHUWKH\HDUVZLWKIHOORZ practitioners. These contacts can often act as a sounding base for new ventures and also provide a much needed realistic perspective of a new service or product.
7KXVWKHQHWZRUNLQJRSSRUWXQLWLHVWKDWDODUJHEXV\FRQIHUHQFHDIIRUGVDUHDQRWKHU tangible benefit for both the participant and hopefully the home organization. The UKSG conference, though, remains a manageable size and is not an overpowering anonymous event. It does, however, have an international, albeit European, slant, ZKLFKLVUHIOHFWHGLQERWKWKHVSHDNHUVDQGWKHGHOHJDWHV

If training end users is a major part of the electronic resources practitioner’s remit, then CILIP offer numerous courses on presentation and training techniques. The annual conference organized by CILIP is ‘Umbrella’ and its 2007 programme has streams on ‘E-content’ and ‘information Literacy’.
The CILIP special interest group that deals with issues broadly in the electronic resources area is the UK eInformation Group (UKeiG). Their remit states that
‘UKeiG is a respected and well-established forum for all information professionals, users and developers of electronic information resources in all formats’ (UKEIG 2007) – in effect the core business of electronic resources in the broadest sense, IRU H[DPSOH QRW MXVW VXEVFULSWLRQEDVHG LQIRUPDWLRQ SURGXFWV EXW WKH PRUH FKDOOHQJLQJDVSHFWVRILQWHUOLQNLQJDQGHPEHGGLQJWKHUHVRXUFHVDQGWHFKQRORJLHV to underpin user-focused services. UKeiG is a personal subscription-based group, though one does not have to be a CILIP member to be eligible. Indeed if you are a CILIP member, one could select membership of UKeiG as one of the two special interest groups one is entitled to join.

JISC, the Joint Information Systems Committee, has as its mission: ‘… to provide world-class leadership in the innovative use of Information and Communications Technology to support education and research’ (JISC 2009), and as such is one of the main grant funders for research in the LIS world. Another very useful body is the JISC infoNet which ‘… aims to be the UK’s leading advisory service for managers in the post-compulsory education sector promoting the effective strategic planning, implementation and management of information and learning technology to support the core activities of learning, teaching, research and business processes’ (JISC 2008). Vendor-led Training
As mentioned previously, the vendors, be they publishers, aggregators or service providers, all offer some sort of training and support resources. The quality and effectiveness of this varies depending on both the provider and the circumstances RI WKH OLEUDU\7KLV W\SH RI WUDLQLQJ LV SDUWLFXODUO\ HI¿FLHQW DQG FRVW HIIHFWLYH LI there are large groups of staff that need to be trained on a new system or product.
Additionally the vendor may be geared up to provide training for large groups of end users. This may be a useful component in any outreach activity which the library is planning to support a new service. Test account and ‘sandpits’ are often provided by the vendors as user support tools and could be rolled out by the library to end users. These are very useful in circumstances when the staff cannot be released for an off-site event, or as post-formal training aides to try out some of WKHVNLOOVWKDWKDYHEHHQOHDUQWDWDSUHYLRXVO\DWWHQGHGHYHQW7KH\KDYHWKHDGGHG advantage of staff being able to test drive new products in private so that they do not have to feel self-conscious or nervous in front of colleagues.
IN-HOUSE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
In most organizations there is a raft of training opportunities available, though SHUKDSVQRWDOZD\VUXQRUVSRQVRUHGE\WKHOLEUDU\)RUWKHSUDFWLWLRQHUVZRUNLQJ in larger organizations, particularly the education sector, there will often be a structured training and development department available to all organization staff.
