forcareers as cattlemen.

a part ofTexas
where"cowboy"
best summarizes the professions ofmany
rugged residents,Tim Junoda and
Elijah Clark,Jr., areworking theirway
intothe cattle industry.Long chrome
syringesand worming
guns have replaced the six- shooters of old but similarities of themodern-day cowboy
with his illustrious ancestors abound.The
horse is still a functional vehicle, boots aregood
for otherthanlooksand
thebrandingironstillglows.
Tim
and Elijah live in the 20th century Old WestsituatedinGonzales, Texas,home
of the internationally
known
Harrell CattleCompany (HCC). The two
Gonzales Fu- ture Farmers are considered valuable"hands" by Harrell
management,
reasonenough
for the variety of duties assigned thepair.Wallace Harrell,
who
along with brother Maurice hasguidedthecompany
through a quarter century ofservice,saysTim and
Elijah"doalotof thingsright."Indicative of the family enterprise that
HCC
has alwaysbeen, Harrell says thecompany
has"raisedthe two boys."

HkeDaddy,"
he adds, "I'vebeen interested in cattleforalongtime.Istarted inthecattle business at eight years old,working
at a nearby ranch earning $5 a day for eighthours of keeping barns clean, feeding horses,checkingcattle
and
ridingfences.Ilearned a lot
on
that ranch—
enjoyed it,too."
At
15, Elijah hiredon
with the HarrellCompany
in one of thecompany's
pecan operations, a kind of additional profit centerowned
byHCC. He knew
of the Harrell reputationand was
glad todraw
HCC
pay. Butworking
cattle wasn't there—
the pecans were too farremoved
from
Elijah'spersonal goalsand
interests.Finally, after only three weeks of pecan work,
an
opportunitycame
alongand
Elijah wentafterit.
"I heard they were shorthanded at the Harrell feedlot," recalls Elijah, "and needed
somebody who
couldridea horse.I landedthejoband worked
therethewhole
summer
doingmany

tenth gradeyears in school, though, theymoved me
outside withmy
father, taking care of a certainamount
of ranchterritory.My
senioryear Itooktheco-op program, goingto school in themorning and working
at Harrell's the restof the day.""The

until 7 or 7:30 p.m.
Now, when
Elijahworks on
theranch during breaksfrom
the Blenn Junior Collegefarm and
ranchmanagement
degree program, 12-hour days arecommon.
Elijah says his duties includewinter feedingand
tagging,brand- ingand
sorting.Much
ofhiswork, hesays, isaccomplishedon
horseback. Elijahsays the long hoursand
derrtanding tasks are worthwhileand up
hisalley.Perhapsmost
appealing is themanagement
traineejob that's promised atHCC upon
Elijah'scompletionof college education.
Not
unlikehisclassmateElijah,Tim
felt strongly directed towardthecattle indus- try.Elijah,though,was
rootedinaranch- ingbackground.Tim
calls himselfa"city boy.""Aftergrowing
up
inthecity,"saysTim,"I
wanted

my

travelprimarily within a 100-mile radius, screening over three million cattleayearand
purchasingsome
250,000.Each
buyer,armed
withknowledge
aboutthenumbers and
kindsof cattleneeded byHCC,
attendsan
average ofsixsalesaweek, purchasing between150and
200 headofcattle ina day'swork.Tim,now
intrainingto be a buyer, isquickto explain that all cattle purchaseddo
notbecome
a partof theHCC
herd."We're a kind ofbrokerage business,"
says Tim. "Clients,

18,000 head capacity feedyard is equipped to harbor severalmajor
purchasesdaily.Room

theHarrellranchcovers over 7,000acres."We
sell between 70and
80 miUion dollarsworth
ofcattleeachyear," Brandt says."Our
typicalcustomersarefeedyards wanting certain kinds ofcattle forfinish- ing.LotsinCaliforniaand
Arizona looktothe Texas panhandle for stock because cattle are concentrated here. In order buying,
we
can find the kinds of cattle needed, load 'emon
trucks andwithin 24 hours they're inthe customer's lot."The
Harrell operation maintains a 5,000-head registered Beefmaster herd, a breed Wallace Harrellsays"iswellsuited to thispartof the country." Harrellrecalls,"When we
firststartedourherd, thebreedwas
relativelyunknown.
Butwe
and the Beefmaster association have advertisedthem
to the pointnow
thatthey arenow
quitewell
known.
Thatmeans more
attrac- tiveprices."Sinceconstruction of a basic
complex
in 1962, theHarrellCompany
has constantlyexpanded
in sizeand
progressedin utiliza- tion ofadvanced
agriculturaltechnology.What's billed as "the industry's most extensive,continuouspreventivemedicine program," replete with astaff ofveterin- arians, maintains healthy stock in the 18,000capacityfeedyard
and on
therange.An embryo
