Bahia is one of the most musical states in Bra- zil. The mixture between the black, white and indigenous ethnic groups originated rich musical rhythms and genres, like axé, samba, pagode and the Brazilian popular music (MBP) itself. Even the cariocan bossa nova has a Bahian, João Gilberto, as one of its creators and most famous names, who charmed the world with his smooth way of singing.
In the late 1960s a new generation of compos- ers and performing artists revolutionized MBP.
caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania e Gal costa created a new way of talking about Bahia and about the country. At the same time, Os Novos Baianos, a group consisting of Baby consuelo, Pepeu Gomes, Moraes Moreira, Dadi, Paulinho Boca de cantor and others, lived the height of hippie movement, with lyrics about topics such as love and freedom.
In Bahia’s casa da Música, located in the Parque Abaeté, documents which tell the story of the Bahian music can be found. The perma- nent collection includes photographs, books and musical instruments.
