transversely as well asina dorsopalmardirection.The
lateraland
medial surfaces are without facets for thecuneiform and
scaphoid.Distally,thelunar

— The Trogosus
cuneiformis roughlytriangularviewed
proximally (fig. 33a),and
has a broad anterior surface that sweeps widelyaround
the lateral side tothepalmar
extremity.The
facet for the ulna is slightly concaveand
nearly circular, truncatedtoward
thepalmar margin by
the transversely elongate facet for the pisiform.A
single facet for the
unciform
coversmost
of the distal surface, with theexceptionofa verysmall facetfor thefifthmetacarpalatitslateral extremity.The
medial portion of theunciform
facet has a greater dorsopalmar extentand
is slightly concave,whereas
themore
con- stricted lateral portion is convex. Medially thisbone
is moderately deep, dorsoventrally,and shows no
facet for articulation with the lunar. Laterally it tapers nearly to a point at itspalmar
extremity.The
palmar portiondoesnotshow
theexpansion notedinthescaphoidand
lunar, this area beingsurmounted by
the pisiform.The Esthonyx
cuneiform lacks the tip of thebone
at thepalmar
extremity of thelateral portion, but otherwise resemblesthat in Tro-NO. 10

gosus. In detail, however, the facet for the ulna ismore
elongate transverselyand
that for the pisiformmore
generally concave. Also, the distal surface for theunciform shows somewhat more
flexure. Itshould be noted, moreover, that this
bone
in figure34 was drawn
upsidedown.
Pisiform.
— The
pisiform (fig. 33a) is largeand
sturdy as repre- sentedintheTrogosus
material.The head
iswellexpanded and
trans- versely oval-shaped, offeringa substantial area for insertion ofapart of the flexor carpiulnaris.The forward
extremity iswidely extended mediallyand
has transversely broad articular surfaces for the ulnaand
cuneiform.The
proximal facet for the ulna is transversely con- cave,wide
at its lateral extremityand
tapering medially.The
distal of thetwo
surfacesis Hkewisebroad laterallyand narrower
medially, butismore
nearlyflat.The
pisiform is not represented in theEsthonyx
specimen, buton
the otherhand
it is includedin the type material of Tillodonfodiens.The
Tillodonpisiform isstrikingly larger,particularlyinthediameter of the extremities, alsothe facet for the ulnawould
appeartobelarger relative to that for the cuneiform.The
length of the pisiform,how-
ever,
though
actuallya littlelonger thanthat intheTrogosus
specimen,is relatively shorter.
Centrale.
— The
centrale (fig. 33b) is thesmallest of the carpal ele-ments
although it presents dorsally a surface as large as, or perhaps larger than, that of themagnum.
Itis a thintabular bone, nearlytri-angularin the outline ofits proximal surface for articulationwiththe lunar.
Along
its medial edge it articulates with the scaphoidand
laterally with the
magnum.
Its surface for themagnum
is slightly concaveand
extended laterally along a part of the distal margin, so that the distal surface for the trapezoid issomewhat
largerand more
nearlytrapeziformthanthe proximal.
Littlecan besaid of the £^f/iOH3u- centrale otherthanthat as
exposed
in the articulated
manus
(fig. 34) it appears distinctand
rectangular inoutlinedorsally. Itisnoticeably lessflattened,proximodistally,than in Trogosus.Trapezium.
— The
trapezium isby no means
the smallestbone
in theTrogosus
carpus. Itpresents acomparatively broadand
deep face dorsally (fig. 32), but ismuch
reduced in thepalmar
aspect.The
proximalarticular facet (fig. 33b) forthe scaphoid covers almost the entire proximal surfaceand
except for therounded
dorsomedial por- tionwould
benearly rectangular. In a dorsopalmarprofile the dorsal portion of the proximal surfaceis gentlyconvex and
thepalmar
por- tion concave.Moreover,

distal surface for the firstmetacarpal is approximately triangular in outline with the smallest angle directed palmad.
The
surface is concave foreand
aft,convex from
side to side,and
in general inclined decidedlyproximad
ina
palmar-medial direction, sothat the proximaland
distal facetsalmostmeet
at thepalmar
extremity of the medial margin.The
lateral sur- faceof thetrapeziumshows
anelongate facetextendingthe lengthof the proximalmargin
for articulation with the trapezoid,and
at the dorsaland palmar
extremities it is extended distally for articulation withthesecondmetacarpal.The more palmar
of thesetwo
facetsfor thesecond metacarpalisdeflected sharplymedialso that thetrapezium slightly overrides the metacarpal.So
far as can be determined in themanus
(fig. 34) with the Es-thonyx
material, the trapeziumis relatively wider transversely across the dorsal surface, in comparison with its proximodistal extent,than in Trogosus,and may
notberelativelyso deepina dorsopalmardirec- tion. Also, so far as exposed, the proximaland
distal surfaces are only convex.Trapesoid.
— The Trogosus
trapezoid is alittle larger than the cen-trale
and more
distinctlywedgelikewithitsthinedgedirectedlaterally.Its proximal surface (fig. 33b) articulates with the centrale
and
isdeeply notchedat the palmar-lateral portion of its margin.
The com-
pressed lateralmargin
of the trapezoidmay make
a linecontact with themagnum
but is largely eliminatedfrom
this articulationby
the centrale. Medially, the rectangular face of the trapezoid articulates withthe trapezium,and
alongthe slightlyrounded
angle between the proximaland
medialsurfacesitmakes
alinecontactwiththe scaphoid.The
distal surface of the trapezoid isconvex from
side to sideand
coverstheproximal extremity of thesecondmetacarpal, exceptwhere
the latter has a small facet at thepalmar
extremity of the medialmargin
for the trapezium.Only
the dorsal surface of thisbone
can be seen inthe articulatedGray
Bullmanus
but it is almost identical in outline to that of Tro- gosus.Magnum. — The magnum
(fig. 33b) isbeyond
doubt themost
pe- culiarly shapedbone
intheTrogosus manus.
It has somethingof theform
of a narrow-soled shoe, invertedand
with the toe directed dor- sallyand
distally. It presentsan
irregularly oval face dorsally,and
proximally it rises keel-liketoward
the"heel" beneaththelunar.The
sides of the elongate proximal portion articulate medially with the centrale
