exploring new frontiers in agriculture.

in Iowa, Selawik, Alaska,may seem
like an unusual place foran
FFA
chap-ter. Selawik. with its population of
80
families isan isolatedEskimo
village located three milesabove
the Arctic Circleand 275
milesfrom
the Russian border.The FFA Chapter
there has the distinction of being themost
northerly chapter in the world.Since the closest road to Selawik is
400
milesaway,
toreach thevillageone must
fly inon
the world's smallest scheduled air carrier.Once

was
at the Selawik school in1976
that
FFA was founded by
students un- der the guidance ofFFA
advisor Nich- olas Galady, the school's science, avi- ationand
agriculture teacher. Selawikwas one
of eight schoolswhich
last year qualified Alaska to receive its state as- sociation charter. All of the schools in- volved are bush schools—
a designation given toany
school in Alaska outside themetropolitan areasand
thehighways
that link
them
together.Galady
says theFFA program was
started at Selawik "to provide a frame-work
for organizing the students into asummer work crew
capable of tending the class'sgrowing
plants." In1975
the horticulture class at Selawik converted the school attic into a greenhouse forgrowing
vegetablesand
flowers.Maggy
Davis, anFFA member
at Selawik, says last yeartomatoes, squashand cucumbers were grown
in the attic greenhouse.Cucumbers
sold in the vil- lage for asmuch
as $1.45 a piece since fruitand
vegetables are typically im- ported ascanned
or frozen products.As might
be expected, the arctic en- vironment is an overriding factor in the village.The
terrain is coveredby snow
for as
many
as eight months, then be-comes
watersoaked
throughout the re-mainder
of the year.The
tundra is ac- tually a frozengel.composed mainly
of water with suspended particles of soiland
plant life.Galady
observes thatgrowing
plants can root only afew
inches before reaching the permafrost layerwhich
does not allow root pene- tration.During
wintersin Selawik. daysgrow
December-January,1977-1978
so short that for a
few weeks
in mid- winter the sun appears only brieflyabove
the horizon. In thesummer
the reverse situation occurs, giving the resi- dents nearly24
hours of continuous sunlight eachday
for over amonth.
The
effectivegrowing
season during thesummer
is lessthan90
daysand
despite the fact that the area iscovered by wat-er, it receives less than 11 inches of rainfall each year. "It is like a giant desert inside an icebox," notes Galady.
Under
these circumstances,growing
food is extremelydifficult, yet theneed
forproducing
food isbecoming
a criti- cal activity at Selawik.The
native pop- ulation hasgrown
rapidly with the ad- vent ofmodern
medical practice,which
has lowered the death rateand
cut in- fant mortalityby more
than half.At
thesame
time motorized vehicleshave made game more
readily accessible, causing depletion of the traditionalmeat
sources such asmoose and
cari- bou.Eskimos from
neighboring whaling villageshave
also noted significant re- ductions in their harvest ofwhale and
seal forfood.
One

his village of Buckland. says thaton
the hunt in 1976. 18White Whale were
harvested. Last year the partywas
successful in taking only three.The
result is a lack of native food, aproblem which
isnow remedied
onlyby
the expensive importation offoodfrom
the continental United States.Galady and
hisgroup
ofFFA mem-
bers
hope
slowly toadd
nativegrown
food to the supply. InSeptember
they returnedfrom
their stateFFA
conven- tion with fourNew Zealand
Whites, a breed of domestic rabbit.The FFA
plans to
manage
the breedingand
feed- ing of the animalsand
tomake
their offspring available to the village fami-lies through the
FFA membership. The
rabbits,
much
larger than the native Arctichare could be used for bothmeat
and
fur.Other
small animals the chap- ter is considering for production are chickensand
goats.Galady
says large animal production ofdomestic animals isimpracticalin the Arctic because of the long winterand
its
snow
cover,which would
limitany
type of grazing.However,
serious con- sideration is being given to reviving the village practice of herding reindeer.Reindeer herds, introduced to Alaska
from
Siberia in the 1930's flourished for several years at Selawik until in1969 when
the village herd joined mi- grating wild caribou, taking yet another source offoodfrom
the villagers.The
strainon
food supplies for Sela- wik isjustone symptom
of the difficul- ties thatthe traditional nativecommuni-
ties ofthe Arctic are experiencing with the confrontation
between
traditional life stylesand
the socialand
technical progress of the 20thcentury.Less than 100 years ago the
Eskimo way
of life at Selawikwas
nearly thesame
as theirancestorshad known
1.000 years before.They were
huntersand
gatherers ofgame and
native vegeta- tion.Even
without the use of metals theywere
self sufficient for foodand
clothing. Travelwas by dog
sled orby canoe
builtfrom whale bone and
seal skin.Homes were made from
the tun- dra soiland
animal skins.Today much
of that culture is gone.Families at Selawik still
do
fish for whitefishand
pike, drying themeat on outdoor
racks for use in the winter. But families also importmuch
oftheir foodand
clothingand
travel is often bysnowmobile, motorboat
or charter air- plane.In September, lines
were
strung for individual telephones to the villagehomes and
sooncommercial
televisionbeamed
by satellitefrom
the48

But do you
reallyknow how
to takethem? Perhaps
the suggestions to followwill not only helpyou
to be less anxious about tests, but they will helpyou
to get highermarks
or the job or licenseyou
want.First ofall, before
you
takeany
test, get yourself completely relaxed— men-
tally, physically
and
emotionally. Ifyou
are tense, taut or tired,you may
either black out, block out or blank out,and
then flunk out. Ifyour mind
is in a whirl or swirl,you might
notremem-
berwhether

relaxyour
mind.Tell yourself that regardless of the
outcome, you have
everything to gain.Pass withahigh
mark, and you win
the medal, the scholarship, the jobor what- 38ever.
Get
alow mark, and you
learn justwhat your weaknesses and
short-comings
are.Tn fact,
one good
reason for taking tests is to find outwhat
needs improve- ment.Too many
failures can pointup
the need for learninghow
to take tests.When you
are seated in the testroom,
shutyour
eyes for amoment
(not longer,
you might
fall asleep)and
shut out the hustleand
bustle of theworld around
you. Resolve todo your
best. Resolve to accept the
outcome, whatever
it is, cheerfully. Ifyou
fail, itwill not be the
end
of theworld.Sit
by
yourselfand
bequiet.Have
con- fidencein yourself.Avoid
gettingmixed up
with otherswho
areengaged
in that lastminute cramming and
cackling.That
onlymakes
for confusion as well as failing marks.Preparation for
any
test does not start the night before. It starts days,weeks
or evenmonths
prior to the ex- amination.Does
it not even beginon
the very firstday
of school or theday you
beginyour
course inbiology,chem-
istry or poultry raising? So,
keep up
withyour
daily assignments.When
tests rollaround
allyou
willneed
todo
issome
systematic reviewing instead of hecticcramming.
In reviewing,
you
cannot, of course, re-read or re-studyan
entire textbook the night before the test.The
thing to do, then, isto digest carefully thesum-
maries attheendsof the chapters. Also.go
throughyour books and
study the underlined partsand
the marginal notes.They
are important, oryou
would
nothave
underscored them.Look
over the items inyour
notebooks carefully.Often
themost
importantma-
terial is
what your
instructor advisedyou
to put inyour
notebook.By
beingalert in class,you
can easily predictwhat some,
ifnot all, of thetest questions will be.What
dates, theories, formulas, terms or words, events, indi- viduals, factsand
figuresand
so forth are constantly beingemphasized? Keep on
the lookout for test-question clues.Study your
teacher's test-question tech- niques.Learn
the very profitable art of test- question prediction.Then, you
will not waste timeon
meaningless material.Never, but never,
be
absenton
"review days" before tests.In preparing for the tests in history, geography, geology,
oceanography and
similar subjects, it is well to use asmany
"visual aids" aspossible.By
look- ing carefully atmaps,
charts, globes, models, diagrams,photographs and
film strips or slides,you
can fix thingsmore
firmlyand permanently
inyour
mind.Various
"audio aids" can alsobe
used in the reviewing process.Perhaps you made
"tapes" ofimportant lectureson
soilagronomy
or animalhusbandry
during the year.Use them
asyou
pre- pare for a test.If possible,
do your
test studyingbe- fore midnight.Cramming and ramming
facts
and
figures intoyour cranium
at four o'clock in themorning
(perhaps aftersome monster movie on
the late- late-lateshow) may

Get your customary
seven or eight hours of sleep so thatyou
will he refreshedand
alertwhen
test time comes.Do you

trouble? If so,you
mighttryusing"mnemonic"
devices or"monikers"
as they aresometimes
called.
For

theorderamong
the colors of the spectrum. Well,you might

There
are millions ofthem.You
simply inventthem
asyou need them
for a specific test, assign- ment, speech or other reason.You may
devise a
moniker
to use butonce and
then discard it.However, you
will find thatmany monikers
willremain
inyour mind
for a lifetime.Ever
hear of the nations of theworld
gettingtogetherforSALT
talks?They have
nothing at all todo
withsalt.Without making
a "ball" of it,you might do some
reviewwork
withone
ortwo
othermembers
of the class.But
be sure to getdown
to business—
but fast.You
will find it best to study foran
hour.Take
ashortbreakand
then study for anotherhour
orso.Look
oversome
ofyour
past test papers.Study
the kinds of errorsyou made
in them.Were you
careless in spelling or inaccurate inyour
simple arithmetic?You may
discover thatyou
wrote"1942" when you
reallymeant

Be
prepared "materially" for the test.Take
everything withyou

will need.Paper
or atest bookletwill prob- ably be supplied.But you may
