smaller theatricalcompanies throughout
the cityacknowledge Broadway's preeminence by
describingthemselves
as"Off-Broadway"
or
"Off-Off Broadway.") Behind
everyBroadway show and
its
handful of
starperformers
isan army of
otherwork-
ers:
chorus members, costume makers,
dressers, setand prop
(property) builders,stagehands, managers, wardroom
mistresses, curtain
manufacturers,
ushers, pit musicians,and
lighting designers. In addition to ashared body of
general theatrical folklore,each of
these theater craftshas
its
own
distinctive stories, skills, traditions,and customs.

year's trendiest fashions;and
ethnic tailorsand seam-
stresses

follow centuries-old traditions toprovide
clothing forcommunity

celebrations. It also includes tensof thousands of New York garment workers who,
likegenerations of New
Yorkersbefore them, work
long hours
at laboriousjobs
cutting, piecing,and sewing
clothing for local designers.Unionization and
laborlaws have done away with
theworst abuses of
early20th- century New York "sweatshops," but many garment workers
are still recently arrivedimmigrants whose
lackof
Englishand
technical skills limitother employment
opportunities.
The garment
trade isstill the largest industry inNew York
City,and
its sizepermits an
incredibledegree of
specialization thatcan only be hinted
atduring
the Festival.Along Seventh Avenue
inManhattan's "Garment
District," small signs in
second- and
third-storywindows
advertise the
presence of
feather importers,button
dyers,mannequin makers,
trimemporiums,
fur cutters,and shoulder-pad manufacturers. Many of
these shops,which
are
open
"to the trade only,"have been
in thesame fami-
lies for three or
more
generations.(The
longevityof many
family businesses in the city often surprises
non-New
Yorkers.)
By
inviting to the Festival artistsand
craftspeo- plefrom
various aspectsof
the city's fashion industry,many of them
trained inmultigenerational
family busi- nesses,we hope
to givevisitorsan
insight into afew of
themany
traditional crafts that sustainNew York

trainedinthe areasofDominican
folkloreand popular
culturethrough
ourConjunto
Folklorico group,which
stressescultural, spiritual,and
materialfolkloretoteach the students aboutcrafts, food,vernaculararchitecture,language,oral traditions,music, dance,and
other areasof folklore.Through
theseprograms,
theclassroom becomes an
