FISH FARMING
ISoneof the old- est forms of agricultureand
has been practiced inmany
parts of the world. Rotation of fishpond
bot- toms with dry land crops dates backmany
generations inEurope
and Asia.In the United States, trout are pro- duced in the
Rocky
Mountains; cat- fish and buffalo fish in the Mississippi Delta; bait fish in the Southeast;and
salmonintheNorthwest.Because fish farming is
on
the in- crease, Professor Philip J. Schaible of Michigan State University outlined the future of this kind of farming in a speech at a recent DistillersFeed
Re- search Council conference.He
point- ed outthat the future ofmankind
will dependon
careful husbandingof every natural resource. Fishery resources are extensive, but 85 percent of this sup- plyremainsunused everyyear.Our
har- vest of 40 million metric tons of fish andfisheryproducts—
ofwhichthe U.S.catch is only 6 percent
—
provides onlya small part of the food in the world today.This hasled toasurge ofinterest in food production
from
the earth's waters.Raising fish is as
much
a science as other types of farming. Careful watermanagement
andsolidfeeding practices are necessary for a profitable business.There are great differences between species of fishes, and this necessitates differencesintheirculture.
Fishfarmingbeginsatspawningtime.
Eggsare "stripped"from females
when
theyare readyto lay. Itislike milking a cow.A
female yieldsfrom 500
to 345,000 eggs.
Male
trout are likewise"stripped" for sperm. Unless the eggs arefertilizedbythemalewithin

not hatch. Afterhatching, the "sac fry"—
onlythree-fourthsof an inchlong—
live fortwo
weeksormore on
the "eggsac" as afoodsupply.The
fish then attain the "advanced fry"
stage and start eating.
When
they be-come

"fingerlings." After a couple of months, theybecome
"parrs" and are then placed in outside pools. It takes a yearand
a halfunder the bestcondi- tionstoproducetroutbigenough
tosell.Cold Water
FishesItiscomparatively simpletoproduce advanced fryof trout in large
numbers
with littleloss.From
the time the eggs are "eyed" until theyoung
fry begin to feed, thereis usuallyverylittle loss.But
when
the advanced fry first seek theirfood,heavylossesmay
occur.Fingerling trout are held duringtheir
first
summer
in the troughs in whichthey arehatched.After theymature,they aretransferredtosmall poolsand thence to raceways with a sand or gravel bot- tom.
Raceways
provide an environment closelysimulating thatin nature. Thereis little difficulty in carrying the trout through the winter if they are graded carefully according to size to prevent cannibalism.
Since there has been an increasing
demand
for bigger trout for stocking purposes, fingerlings are held for longer periods,and
largenumbers
of troutfrom
6to 12 inchesinlength are plant- ed eachyear.Trout
grow from
an egg to market- able size (nine inches) in 10 to 14months
time.As
they mature they aremoved
through connectingcanalsfrom
onepond

itcan beeasilyremoved.
Salmon
diets for hatchery use have been developed inOregon
intheform
of pellets that are softand
moist.An
extruder with different plate hole sizes produces excellent pellets with a mini-
mum
of labor.Warm
WaterFishesWarm
water fishes obtainmuch
of theirfoodvia a"food chain."Nutrients dissolvedinthewater cause anincrease inmicroscopicplantsand
animalplank- ton which serve as food for insects, small fish, etc. These in turnbecome
foodforlargerfish.Warm
water fishes produce several times asmuch

and
supplement-alfeedingtriplesit.
Nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, andlime are applied to the
pond
as isdone with landtoinduceaheavy grow- th of semi-microscopic aquatic plants (phytoplankton).
The
so-called "waterbloom"
is fundamental for acomplex
"food chain" which leads
up
through organisms of increasinglycomplex
or- ganization to the levelof animalslargeenough
tobeconsumed
directlybyfish.The
"water flea" is an early step in this chainand
is vital food foryoung
fishes.
Certain fish, such as the
minnows and
bluegills, use naturalpond
organ- ismsmore
directlyand
serve as forage forsome
types of fish.The
speciesemployed
aregenerallylargemouthblack bassand
bluegill; crappie and othermembers
of the sunfishfamilymay
also beusedastheseed stock.In the lower Mississippi River area, buffalofish
and
catfisharecomplemen-
tary crops to rice growing. Rice fields are flooded for abouttwo
years to killweeds, reduce
damage from
insects,and
irrigate.
The
flooding of theland bene-fits the general condition, fertility,
and
structure of the soil. Thus, fish farm- ing fits naturally with rice production.Buffalo fish
grow from
less than an ounce to marketable size intwo
years.When
fishareharvested,waterispump-
edout of thefielduntilthefisharecon- centrated in a cornerof the field.The
fish are caught in nets, iced in boxes,
and
hauled to the market.One
hun- dred buffalo fish peracre will attain a weight of five pounds each (saleable size) aftertwo
years in fertile water.Natural fish foodsareincreased bythe addition of inorganic fertilizer.
The
bigmouth
buffalo fish is preferred to carpand
has afleshof pleasingappear- anceand
goodflavor.Catfish culture is a recently emerg- ingindustryinsouth centralU.S. Fifty million
pounds
will be produced this year. Potential production will be five to tenbillionpounds per year. Pelleted feeds are fedto reducepollution of the water.The
feeding rate isbasedon
the estimatedpounds
of catfish presentfrom
samples obtained byseining.The main
growingperiod forchannel catfish iswhen
the water temperatureis above 70 degrees. Feeding is dis- continued
when
the water temperature falls below60
degrees. Fingerling cat- fishgrow
to marketablesize (22 to 24 ounces) in228
days if stocked in the spring;394
days if stockedin the fall.A maximum
production of over a ton per acre in252
days can be obtainedfrom
a stock of2,000 fingerlings. Dur- ing the growingseason, a food conver- sion of 2>Apounds
of feed for eachpound
ofgainisrealized.Thereisreason tobelieve that aone
to one ratio will be achieved inthe future.A
majordif- December-January,1967-1968ficulty in catfish farming is that these fishcontract
more
diseases thanbuffalo fish.Carp
aregrown on
rice fields which are fertilizedand
flooded.The
fry are introducedinthe pondsand
remain un-til thewater isdrained off for thehar- vest of the rice.
The
fish are held in ponds over the winter and placed in newly flooded rice fields the following year.Up
to 1,500 pounds peracre are obtained.Bait
minnows
are indemand
to ser- vice the growingnumber
of fishermen.A
greatdemand
existsinsummer when
the supply is limited in the northern states.
The
costof raisingbaitminnows may
be less thanthe cost of seining in distantwaters,and
asupplyon hand
at alltimescanmeet demands.An
adequate water supplyisofprime importance in selecting asite for rear- ingponds.The
water should bemoder-
atelyhard,and
the temperature should be highenough
topromoterapid grow- th;pH
should be slightlyon
the alka- lineside. Springsand
artesian wellsare most desirable because they are clearand
generally freefrom
pollution.Creeks, lakes, rivers, or ponds are utilized if springs are not available.Twice
asmany
bait fish can be raised per acre of water by artificial feeding. Baitminnow
farmsare success- fully established in south central states and Wisconsin. Ninety percent of the farm-raised baitminnows
are sold live eitheras bait, fingerling stock,or adult fishfor"fee"ponds.New
developments such as pulsed, direct current fieldsand
air bubble screensmay make
it possible fornew
types of fish farmingto developin the future.Fully integratedcompaniescontrolling every phase of fish production
from
hatchery toultimate deliverymay
bein the offing.Fishfarmingofferstheopportunityto diversify agriculture.
At
present, itpro- duces crops for which thereis nosur- plusand
actuallyimprovestheland for arable crops.As
lakeand
river fishbe-come
depleted, the commercial fish farmersmay become
themain
sourceof supply. In the presentstateofdevelop- ment,fishfarmingisgenerally profitable and, insome
instances, grossincome and
net profit exceed that of other agricultural crops.Photos, top right:
