CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD

E. Techniques of Data Analysis

This research used descriptive quantitative research. The data analyzed by closed ended questionnaire for quantitative data and open ended questionnaire for qualitative data. The closed ended questionnaire data calculated using percentage and the open ended questionnaire data investigated the applications they use to learn English Speaking.

For quantitative data designed using likert scale proposed by Cresswell.

The steps of quantitative data were as followed:

1. Scoring

Scoring is giving score on respondents to obtain quantitative data in this research. The study used a modify Likert Scale, in a Likert Scale modification. The answer was given by students. Here is the table below which consisted of different score and was used to give the score for each item in the questionnaire.

Strongly Aggree 5

Agree 4

Undecided 3

Disagree 2

Strongly Disagree

Table 3.2 (Cresswell, 2012)

The data in this application aimed to determine the benefits of the applications used for learning English speaking and the tool of data analysis

19

used to determine the benefits of applications for students speaking was Mean.

Mean is used to determine or calculate the average value using arithmetic calculations. The calculation of the mean is determined by enumerating the values of each respondent’s answer value SA = 5, A = 4, UN

= 3 D = 2 SD = 1. If the majority of respondents strongly agree (SA), then the amount Mean will be close to 5 and vice versa. If the majority of respondents Strongly disagree (SD), then the magnitude of the mean will be close to 1 on the scale (1-5) based on the maximum value and the minimum value can be known how the perception of respondents.

Having determined the value for each item, the researcher then analyzed the item and used the formula below in order to find the value of Mean from each item. Thus, It can be formulated through:

F x 100

N x the highest score Information

F : the number of answers N : the number of students 2. Classification Score

Analyzing the data from the questionnaire used Likert Scale to see the benefits of the applications used by millennial students for their speaking.

20

Thus, the Likert Scale was used for classification score of the result of the data

Score Classification

85%– 100% Strongly Agree

69%– 84% Agree

52% – 68% Not Sure

36%– 50% Disagree

20%– 35% Strongly Disagree

Table 3.3 (adapted from Cresswell, 2008)

Having analyzed the classification score above, the researcher used formula to analyze all of the data which resulted in finding the category of classification score. It can be formulated through :

F x 100%

N (Number of Items x the highest score) Information

F : the number of answers

N : the number of students

After the researcher finishes calculating the percentage distribution and finds the data. The researcher made a description from the accumulation of all items based on the data. This description portrays the benefits of applications used to learn English speaking for the millennial.. This will be

21

effective because it can give easy comprehension to the readers, students, teacher and future researcher when seeing the benefits of applications being used.

22 CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter is about the result of the study presented. The chapter is divided into two main sections. Finding shows the result description from the data that had been collected through questionnaires described in table form. Then, discussion contains explanation of findings which reflect to the result of the data.

26 CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

This chapter consists of two sections, the first section deals with the conclusion of findings of the research and the other one deal with the suggestion.

A. Conclusion

Based on the result of the research, the researcher concluded that there are some applications used by the class H of Public Administration students. They are google translate, youtube, kamusku, whatssapp, instagram, u-dictionary, and facebook. The applications help them to have a better speaking, they can make complex sentences which suitable with the conversation, they could be more flounce to speak English and understanding more to the words from people they talk to.
