FFA Foundation

does industry contributeto our Foundation? I found the answer on our
Annual
Good-Will Tour.Most
of our stops were to visit companies that are donors to the national
FFA
Foundation.
As
national officers of theFFA, we
had studied a lot about theFoundation, andwe
were pretty wellacquainted with the programof awardsthat the Founda- tion provides forFFA members who
do outstanding work.We knew
that about 250 business and industrial con- cerns throughout the United Statesmake
annual contributions to the Foundation to providemoney
for the awards. Probably like myself, you have wondered justwhy
they did.t think the Good-Will
Tour
cleared upmy
thinkingon that subject.As we
met andtalkedwith the peoplewho
are in responsiblemanagement
positions with the donor companies
we
began to realize that they, likeFFA
members, are planning for the future.
While they're concerned about business today and next week, they also are looking ahead to five, ten, or even fifty
years from now.
They
have checked into the FutureFarmer
organization, and have decided thatmoney
they spendnow
to encourageFFA members
will pay good dividends in the future.

Industry sees our Foundation as Americanism in action.
It isthe American way and
aguardian of our free enterprise system.
"I like to see a boy
who
has his goals set high, and who's willing towork
hard to get where he wants to go," is the kind ofcomment we
heard frequently.Two
principal reasons for their sup- port of theFFA
Foundation weremen-
tioned frequently aswe
visited them:The
one they put at the top is lead- ership and citizenship development by farm boys through participation inFFA
activities.
We
found these businessmen verymuch
concerned with the future of ourAmerican
system of competitive, free enterprise. Theirown
futures, both as individuals and as companies, dependupon America
maintaining the form of government that encouragesmen
towork
and take risks in the hope of gaining profit.Farmers are businessmen, too, and the donors see farmers as allies in their fight to preserve our free enterprise system.
They
want Future Farmers to develop into strong leaders.I got the impression that the donors are really sold on the
FFA
idea of providing activities that keep themem-
bersbusy at constructive
work
or good, clean fun. Reading the big city news- papers, thesemen
are confronted every day with stories about juvenile delin- quency. They
realize that most of thistrouble iscausedbyjust asmall percent- age of the boys and girls, but
we
heard a lot ofcomments
about what awon-
derful thing it would be if there were
more
organizations like theFFA
in city schools.The
donors' second principal reason for supporting theFFA
Foundation isbecause they see that it provides in- centives for boys to
become
good far- mers.Good

those are the main reasonswhy
busymen
