withher son,Kotka,the chief,and a daughter,Hofisi, wife of Tu'noa, the Flute chief. Hoiisi hasno children, and if none are born to her, theHonau
clan, which was oncemost
powerful inWalpi. willbecome

KoKOP Clans
The
formerhome
of theKokop
clanswas
Sikyatki, apueblonow
inruins, about three miles north of Walpi. Archeologic evidence indi- cates that this pueblo
was
destroyed before the first contact of theHopi
with th(i Spaniards, and theKokop
legends declare that itwas
overthrownby
Walpi.There was
a clan in theKokop group
called theMasauu
clan,and
theSnake
legendsrecountthatMasauu
formerlyowned
all thecountry, but thatthey, theSnake
people, overcamehim
and receivedtheirtitletothesiteofWalpi from
him. This is believed tohe a reference tothe Sikyatki tragedy,and to indicate thatMasauu,
the (rod of Fire,was
atutelarygod
of theKokop
orFirewood
peopl(>.Katci, thechief of the surviving
Kokop
clans, saysthat his people originallycame from
th(> pueblo ofJemez
or theJemez
country, and that beforetheylived atSikyatkithey had a puei)lo inKeams
canyon.Others say that they also oncelived at P^ighteen-tnile spring, between Cotton's i-anch (Pueblo (lanado) and Pufici
(Keams
canyon); others thatthey drifted atone time into tln^ eastern part of Antelope valley,where
the ruin of their pueblocan still be seen.ArcheologicinvestigationshowsthatSikyatkiwasinhabitedfor
many
years, that its population
was
large,and thatithad developed ceramic;art in special lines characteristic of
Tusayan
ware.The

had developed a characteristic ai't which could hav'e been attained only after a long inter\'al.The
peculiarities of this pottery are notfound elsewherein thePuebloareaandare notequaled bymodern Hopi
potters. These conditions indicate long residence inTusayan.
The
being called Eototo hasmany
resemblancestoMasauu
andmay

same
being under another name. There was formerly an Eototoclanamong
theKokop
people, and themasks
of thetwo per- soniticationsare verysimilar. In Niman-katcina, in which Eototo is per.sonated, theKokop

The Honani
clans once lived at Tuwanacahi, noi'th of theHopi
puel)los,
where
ruins arc still to be seen.They
say that theHonani
katcinascame up from
thoUnderworld
at that point, and that they entrustedthemselvestothespecialkeepingof theseclans.The Honani
migrated to Oraibifrom
theirhome
at Tuwanacabi, and latersome
ofthem went
to the iliddlc mesa, and toAwatobi
and Walpi.At
the timeof theAwatobi
massacre,in 1700,some
of theHonani women were
carriedtoMastcomo,
near the ^Middle mesa,where
theywere
dividedamong
their captors,some
being taken to Mishongnovi, and others to Walpi.These
women
arenotnow
representedby
femaledescendantsinWalpi, asall theHonani women
on the Eastmesa
aredomiciledinSichumovi."Evidences
drawn from
the pictograph}^ ofmodern
potteiyshows
that the katcinas were late arrivals at Walpi. and their association withHonani
andAsa
clansshows
thatthesetwo
groups were kindred.That
theHonani
claim to have the katcinas in their special keepingpoints thesame way
and supportsthe legendsthat this ciUtwasalateaddition to the preexistingHopi
