ALFRED Alfred University senior guard Devon Downing (Canton, OH/Glenoak) has been named Player of the Week in men's basketball by the Empire 8 athletic conference.Downing was honored for the week ending Jan. 13, in which the Saxons (7-5, 2-1) opened their conference schedule with two wins in three Empire 8 contests. He averaged 25.7 points on 52 percent shooting (50 percent from three-point range), 7.3 rebounds, six assists and 2.7 steals.Downing, a preseason All America, is the Saxons' second-leading scorer, with 17.3 points per game. He needs just 80 points to break the Alfred University career scoring record of 1,931 points, currently held by former Saxon Bill Byrne.
