The
fur, ascompared
with otherspecimensofthe genus from Mexico,isshortand
sparse,and
themembranes more

Skull
and
Teeth.The
skullissmallwitha shortbroad rostrum,and
high, stronglyroundedbraincase.The
palate iswideposteriorly,narrowed an teriorly; posterior palatalprojection shortand
broad. Auditalbullsesmall;basisphenioid pitsdeep.
The
teeth are smalland
thetoothrowsshort,that portionbehindthe anteriorpremolar beingsostronglydivergentas toform anoticeable anglewiththelineofthe anteriorportion.Measurements.

subrufum is awellmarked
formwhich
doesnot appeartointergradewithany
otherknown
species. Insizeitisinterme diatebetweentheHemiderma
castaneum ofH.Allenand
thelargeMexican
species called nzteca
by
Saussure.fThe body
issmalland
thelimbsslenderand
short (forearm 39ascompared
with42 givenby
Saussure). Italso differsmarkedly
in cranialcharactersfromazteca,theskullbeingnotonlyshorterand
smaller but of a verydifferent aspect,the braincase rising abruptly above thelevelofthe rostrum,itssides flaringont ina broadly rounded archand
thepalateand
rostrum beingrelativelymuch
broader.The
teeth alsoaremuch
lighter; thetoothrowisshorterby
a millimeterand
therela tiveproportions of the cusps ofsome
ofthe teethdiffermarkedly.Inadditiontothetypeseriesfrom Oaxaca,I
have examined
specimens inthecollectionofthe FieldColumbian Museum
from Achotal,Vera
Cruz,which
do not appear to differ inany
essentialway
from the type.The
colorisperhapsalittlepalerbutthisisan extremelyvariablecharacter in thisgenus,in
which
distinctdichromatismexists.*Measurementstakenfrom dryskin.
