A NEW POLAR HARE FROM LABRADOR*
BY GERRIT
S.MILLER,
JR.Certain
marked
discrepancies areapparent
inthe measure ments
ofPolar Hares from Labrador and Newfoundland tabu
latedunder tbe name Lepus
arcticus bangsiby Mr. Samuel N.
Rhoads
in his recent 'Synopsis
ofthe Polar Hares
ofNorth America.'
fThey
are,however, passed by without comment.
On examining the specimens
intheUnited
StatesNational Mu
seum,
togetherwith a few
lentme by Mr. Outram Bangs,
I find that these differences are correlatedwith
others,both
cranialand
external,and
thatthe Labrador Polar Hare
is readilysep
arablefrom
trueLepus
bangsi(Rhoads)
ofNewfoundland.
Its relationship tothe Polar Hare
of BaffinLand, Lepus
arcticus Ross,is,through the
lossofMr. Kumlien's specimens,
lesseasilydeterminable. Lepus
arcticus,however, according
tothe
best testimony, never assumes
acomplete dark summer
coat;
while the
Mingle skull thatIhave examined
differsfrom
that ofany
ofthe Labrador specimens. As the Polar Hare
ofLabrador cannot be
identifiedwith
eitherLepus
arcticusorLepus
