Sept the 16, 1862
I now will sit down in my tent to write a fiew lines to you I am as well as usual I had the pleasure of sleeping with Daniel Collins last knight: he heard that there was a company come in here and stoped at Suffolk imcampm ent from Alegany and he got a pass and came thirty miles to see if we was here and we was glad to see him whether he was glad to see us or not but I think that he was glad
as well as we tell Esther that he said that George Feathers was well and Moarty was well to O we had a good visit with Dunk: wee heard this Morning that our men had taken Old Stonewall Jackson and fifteen thousand of his men if it is so it is the best news that we have heard since the beginning of the war O I hope that it is a true reporte I think that if Stonewall Jackson is taken the war will soon come to a close but I think it is to good news to
be dependeid on their is a great rejousing [rejoicing] among

The soldiers about it whether it is tru or not t Daniel Collins says that we drew
more and better clothes than they did we drew one pair of Pants two of drawers two shirts two Pair of socks one Over Coat one nice Frock Coat and one Sack coat and a cap and blanket we have all that we can carry now I will till you some things that I saw while I was on the boat I saw a school of fish about twenty, rods from the boat of nearly one hundred in nomber that was as bit as old Dick Bentley if we could have catched one or two of them we
could have had a feast we saw fish from that size down to the size of fish that
you can see in [wau?] brook Our Regement is building a brick oven on our ground and I think that we will live first rate when we can get warm bread: we got prety well drilled
out coming own [down] here but out Colonel says that we shall have a chance to rest out now our Colonel name is Thomas Thorpe our first Lieutinant is Prof Sayles our orderly Sargt is Rev H.O. Abot we have the best of Officers: our first tents was

verry small and open at both end. They wer just big enough for two men to crall in and both ends stick out bit but the tents that we have got now is big enough for five men and they shut up all light and we have our old tent to spred down on the ground under our blankets Richard Charles Rufe and I and a boy tents
together I want you to exkuse my scrabbling for I have to sit flat on the ground and write
on my knee the negroes are as thick as mustard here we hire the Winchis to do our washing the negroes are as mutch blacker than any that you ever saw in Bath as they are blacker than the whitest man you ever saw they shine as if they wer varnished: the Ward boys are all well write as soon as you get get this from
