ABSTRACT

The Roles of Social Media as Learning Media to Support Online English Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic for Eleventh Grade Students at

SMK Negeri 9 Bandarlampung

Nia Noviana 18113043

This research aimed to investigate the roles of social media as the learning media and to identify the types of social media to support online English learning during Covid-19 pandemic at SMK Negeri 9 Bandarlampung. The qualitative method in the term of case study used by the researcher in this research. Questionnaires, interview and document used by the researcher to collect the data. In questionnaires, there were 16 questionnaires in the term of closed-ended statements that adopted from several journals. In interview session, it consisted of 4 open-ended questions with short answers. To strengthen the data results, the researcher used several previous studies from other journals. The researcher found several roles of social media in online English learning. The roles that social media had in online English learning based on student's perception were encouraging student's interest in learning English, building student's communication in learning English, and improving student's understanding in online English learning. Besides the roles of social media in online English learning, the researcher found some findings about kind of social media used by students in online English learning, such as Instagram, Youtube, WhatsApp, Twitter and Tik Tok, the way social media helped students in online English learning, and students opinion about the use of social media in online English learning.
