ABSTRACT

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not the use of Group Investigation Method can improve the students’ speaking skill at the eighth grade of SMPN 3 Bontomarannu, Gowa academic year 2013-2014 which refer to the skill of the students to speaking in vocabulary and grammar. The researcher applied a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test-post-test design. The subject of the research was the eighth grade students in SMPN 3 Bontomarannu, Gowa. The sample consisted of 30 students. The data were collected or the instrument of this research through speaking test and tape recorder (pre- test and post-test). The pre-test intended to find out the students’ basic knowledge and their skill inspeaking, while the post-test aimed to finding out the students’ percentage in speaking after the treatment was given.

To find out the effectiveness of using group investigation in improving the students’

speaking skill, the researcher applied t-test analysis. The value of t-test for vocabulary was 24.7 and it was greater than t-table (2.045) at the level of significant (p) = 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) = 29, while the value of t-test for grammar was 21.6 and also greater than t-table (2.045).

Therefore, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It means that the use of group investigation to improv the students’ speaking skill in vocabulary and grammar at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Bontomarannu, Gowa.
