ABSTRACT

An Analysis of Verbal Humour Used in The Family Guy Season 16 from The Perspective of Relevance Theory

Verbal Humor is known as violation of principles of communication suggested by principles both textually and interpersonally. In that case, to understand the pattern of communication in humor, the study of pragmatic is needed. Moreover, the study of pragmatic can be used to analyze the mechanism of language in humor. Thus, related to the humor and its study, the writer in this research is interested in analyzing verbal humour used in one of the famous television shows in America entitled The Family Guy in season 16 (20 episodes) from the perspective of relevance theory (Sperber and Wilson). Further, in order to do the proper analysis, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and proposed Sperber and Wilson’s theory (2012) in analyzing the mechanism of humor. As the result of the research, it shows that the form of verbal humor used in The Family Guy sitcom commonly about people’s daily life such as friendship, job, responsibility, culture (Christmas) and many others. Furthermore, the mechanism of humor in The Family Guy sitcom is using the moment of optimal relevance of cognitive principle which means that when the audience has a common presumption of a context of conversation, the speaker or the figure in the sitcom is producing something unexpected to make the audience laugh or joy in humor.
