ABSTRACT

Semantic Change Analysis of Jargon Towards Jokowi’s Speech at The World Economic Forum

In order to be able to satisfy human needs to get acknowledgment, gain information, and define a sense of self and social identity, joining the group is one of the answers.

People as social creatures need language to interact. Language is used to communicate with each other. In this case it can be said simply the language and environment are related. The existence of languages creates language varieties. One of the varieties of language is Jargon. Jargon is a language and vocabulary that is peculiar to certain people in a trade, profession, or another group. The focuses of this study is on observing the changing of the meaning of the jargon in Jokowi’s speech at the World Economic Forum.

This study has two objectives. The first is to identify the Jargon in Jokowi Speeches at the World Economic Forum. The second is to reveal the meaning of jargon that undergone the semantic change found in Jokowi's speeches. In conducting this research, the researcher applied qualitative method. However, the approach of this research is semantic. In this study the researcher also applied theory of jargon by Halligan’s and Chaika’s to find out the form of jargon, theory of meaning by Leech’s and the last the researcher applied theory of semantic change by Ullmann’s theory.

There are 47 data identified as jargon. From those 47 lexical items, there is 1 Jargon that experienced semantic change which is "avengers" this jargon include in the kind of “word” of jargon. Only 1 categorization that suit with the theory of Ullmann’s which is narrowing.
