I have thought it best to take a simple mould, which is a type of all our common wares, and follow its progress from the mixing of the raw clay to the finished product. Wherever we find the ruins of man's former home, there we are likely to find pottery, not of course the ornate stuff we get with a two pound box of some breakfast food, but pottery is exactly the same and it is a of the best means we have of telling the development and civilization of the people then living. From such humble beginnings the whole empire of pottery probably grew, and our methods of today have merely vastly improved upon those of the wild things.

If it is intended for casting only, it should simply be taken to a tank where it can be conveniently reached by the caster. However, if it is to be used for casting, pressing or any other operation where the clay is to be used in the plastic state, it must be freed from its water. After the clay bark has hardened sufficiently, it is taken out and put through a mop mill.

The mill is a large cylinder in ,vbich are turning knives so inclined that the clay is gradually forced from one side of the mill to the other. The piece is left in the mold until it is dry enough to be removed without injuring the mold. Leaving aside the gradual development of the gloss, we will look at it for a moment as we have it today.

When it becomes necessary to use soluble substances, they are all put together with a portion of the insoluble, and melted, or fried as it is called.

And when the worker has done all he can, the fire proves his work what kind it is. He may have been careless, his carelessness, all will come to light; he may have been dishonest and tried to patch up the weak places, the fire will reveal it; or he may have put careful, honest, lively labor into his work, and then, and then alone, he will do his work. 34; I took a piece of plasticine, and one day I made it lazy, And as my fingers pressed it, still It moved and yielded to my will, I came again as the days passed. Finally the clay particle was hard.

I took a piece of living clay, and gently shaped it day by day, shaping with my strength and art the gentle and yielding heart of a young child. 34; What I understand by true art is the expression of man's pleasure in labor. 34; Whatever part of a wise man's work is done honestly and benevolently, that is his book or his work of art. .

He was walking with a fellow named Jackson on a hill at the back of the town; From there, he saw a wonderful view, took photos of the city, which is nicely decorated, but not too beautiful. This afternoon I met a girl named Rice; went for a walk, really interesting girl. She is from Iowa and good looking but not as good as the other girl, she will call her on Saturday night. She made a vase that she will give to me when it is fired and glazed.

Went out to football tonight, tomorrow, and will play one of the halves. One of the girls told me I would soon get used to it, said she threw them like a tin roof shed water. I guess she's not mad, she'll call her tomorrow night in the hall.

How few know the numerous processes that a teacup has to go through and the many that it has to go through before it is ready for you, my reader. First we go to the model maker's room, this is where all the shapes are made. Plastic-of-paris they are made of, and one side is hollow, only the shape of the outside of a cup.

From here let's go to the back of the pottery shop where the clay is prepared for use. Now we go to the cup maker to see how the cup begins its journey from hand to hand until it is ready for the market. At the bottom of the arm is a steel tool, shaped as the profile of the inside of the cup should be.

He wets his fingers and carefully presses the clay down into the spinning mold and then slowly pushes the jigger arm down. As he presses down on the clay at the bottom of the mold, he slowly pushes it up the sides between the edge of the tool and the mold. When it reaches the desired thickness, the arm is released and swings up, and the cup is ready and ready to dry.

The handle is pressed from solid clay, carefully finished and cemented to the cup body by a bit of the same clay softened with water. The ware as it comes out must be thoroughly brushed to remove all the loose flint, and then sorted. It is now in what is called the cookie state, a dull, rough surface with nothing to do with the fine-washed product but the shape.

Girls cut out the prints and stick them on the dishes, rubbing them with mild soap and a flannel cloth. The paper is soaked in the same way as in the other process and the ware is dried. Girls at benches now fill in the designs with different colors using brushes.

The temperature reached is only a bright red, and far below that reached by the other furnaces. Can you be true to eyes of blue when you look into eyes of Brown. The first basketball game between the State School girls and the college girls resulted in a score of 12-14 in favor of the latter.

How often is it advisable to tell a man that he is lying, if you know that he is lying. And they say Palmer wanted to hear the Alleghanian members think, and Ford Whitford stood up and said he wanted to make a little mistake. The State School girls defeated the college girls in a game of basketball by a score of 11 to 10.
