Section 3. This act shall take effect immediately
Sir: I have the honor to present to you my report on the work of the New York State School of Clay and Pottery for the year ending June 10, 1909, being the ninth annual report. Enrollment of students continues to increase, and the quality of the staff is improving, which means that a larger proportion of students are enrolled in four-year studies than ever before. Your principal has received many letters of appreciation from those who have wished to avail themselves of the work of the school.
Sketch plans of this extension have been submitted to the State Architect, who estimates that the cost of the building and heating would be $18,500, not including ovens, furnaces and pyrometric instruments. The maintenance appropriation of $7,500 annually hitherto included in the appropriations act did not meet the school's requirements, and last year an additional appropriation of $2,500 was provided in the appropriations act. It has never retreated from the position it initially held, and there is ample evidence in the correspondence continually received and in the recognition afforded both at home and abroad, that the efforts of the State of New York to strengthen this important branch of industrial and technical education are fully appreciated.
Your Director will acknowledge the loyal and enthusiastic work of Miss Haydock who is in charge of the Department of Modeling and Design and will express his grateful appreciation for the hearty co-operation of the Faculty of Alfred University in the various departments of what the students are assigned become
