Bequests
LOUISE A. CANFIELD died at Scio, New York, August 23, 1906. Her will bears date of July 20, 1906, and it was probated in Allegany County, New York, September 14, 1906 and re- corded in Liber 17 of Wills, page 324. The will contained the following clause:
" I e;ive, devise and bequeath unto the trustees of Alfred
University the sum of One thousand dollars to found a Scholar-
ship, to be known as the L. L. Canfield Scholarship Fund.

BEQUESTS 41The said Scholarship to be enjoyed by the descendants of George Canfield, Catherine Hall, and Caroline Bently, brothers and sisters of L. L. Canfield, deceased, or to such other needy or worthy persons as the Board of TrustePS of said University may determine.''
ELIZA M. CRANDALL died at Friendship, New York, on the 16th day of September, 1908. Her will bears date the 30th day of January, 1901, and it was probated February 5, 1909 in Allegany County, New York. Liber 18 of Wills, page 136. The second clause of the will reads as follows:
"Second, I give, devise and bequeath to Alfred University, located at Alfred, New York, the equal one half of my personal estate, except my household goods and furniture, to be invest- ed and called The Eliza M. Crandall Scholarship; the net income only to be used for the payment of the term bills of some worthy and needy student; the surplus, if any, to be at the disposal of the University."
Eliza Nelson Fryer died at Berkeley, California, May 10, 1910. Her will bears date of June 19, 1908 and was admitted to probate in the Superior Court of Alameda County, California.
Her will contained the following clause:
" I direct that my Executor shall sell my lots in Peralta Park, Berkeley, as soon as the same may be disposed of at a fair valuation, and I direct that the proceeds of such sale, together with any property coming to or left to me from the estate of my mother, shall go as follows:
(1) Two-thirds to my niece, Mary L. Williams.
(2) One-third to the President of Alfred University, at Alfred Center, New York, and to the Pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist Church at Alfred Center, to hold in trust and to use as they deem best for the establishment and maintenance of Scholarships at Alfred University for worthy and needy women students." ·
MARYE. PITTS died at Friendship, N. Y., December 14, 1910. Her will was duly admitted to probate January 13, 1911 in Allegany County, New York. Liber 18 of Wills, page 854.
The will contained the following clause:
"8th, I give and bequeath to Alfred University of Alfred, New York, the sum of One thousand dollars to be used and applied by said University for the scientific department thereof."
Mary E. Rich of Tampa, Florida, died in Ceres, New York,
October 21, 1910. Her will bears date of August 3rd, 1910 and
was admitted to probate at Tampa, Florida. The will contains
the following clauses:

ALFRED YEAR BOOK, 1909-10" Article Second. Desiring to honor the name and memory of my parents, John and Harriet Edwards, and to promote the cause of education, I give and bequeath to Alfred University,·
located at Alfred, in the County of Allegany, and State of New York. the sum of One thousand dollars, to be paid within three years after my death, for the purpose of founding and permanently endowing a scholarship in said University,· to be known as The John and Harriet Edwards Scholarship.
"Article Tenth. If, after paying the foregoing bequests, the residue of my estate shall amount to One thousand dollars, I hereby give and bequeath to Alfred University, located at Alfred m the County of Allegany and State of New York, the sum of One thousand dollars for the purpose of founding and permanently endowing a scholarship in said univei·sity to be known as the Mary E. Rich Scholarship. If, after paying the bequests as directed in the second, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth Articles, the residue of my estate shall not equal when . converted into cash, the sum of One thousand dollars, I hereby will and direct that the same constitute part and parcel of the residue of my estate and hereby direct that it be dis- posed of as directed in Article Twelfth of this, my last will and testament.
"Article Eleventh. It is my will and desire, and I hereby direct that the beneficiaries of the Scholarships hereinbefore bequeathed shall be absolutely free from the use of tobacco and intoxicating liquors in any form or manner, and that they shall not indulge in card playing or dancing."
The Following Forms of Bequests Are Recommended
1 I give, devise, and bequeath to ALFRED UNIVERSITY, located at Alfred, New York, the sum of doll,trs, to be safely invested, and called "The General Endowment Fund;" the net income only to be used for the general expenses of the University.
2 I give, devise and bequeath to ALFRED UNIVERSITY, located at,,Alfred, New York, the sum of Twenty five thousand dollars, to be safely invested, and called " The Professorship;" the ne't income only, or so much thereof as may be necessary, to be used to pay the salary of the incumbent of said professorship, the surplus income, if any, to be at the dis- posal of the University.
3 I give, devise, and bequeath to ALFRED UNIVERSITY, located at Alfred, New York, the sum of One thousand dollars, to be safely invested, and called
"The Scholarship;" the net income only to he used for the payment of the term bill of some worthy and needy student, the surplus income, if any, to be at the disposal of the University,
4 I give. devise, and bequeath to ALFRED UNIVERSITY, located at Alfred,
New York, the sum of dollars to be expended in
the purchase of books for the Library,
