The product of the Celadon Roofing Tile Company made at Alfred, N. Y.,. . is considered the standard of excellence for roofing tiles in the United States. It was Friday afternoon, and after two hours' hard work in the chemical laboratory, Bessie Sinclair went to her room "tired," as she expressed it. Soul." She's on good terms with every body in town, from the Irish Katy in the kitchen to the minister.

Then she opened the second letter, which turned out to be nothing but one from her aunt, saying that she had grown fond of the girl whose portrait hung over the mantle in the drawing-room at Ho1ne, and resolved just to see Bessie and '' the inside of a boarding school " before she went back to Idaho, and therefore would be there Monda,y. When she reached home and opened the door of her room — her own cozy little den — she drew back in astonishment and thought, that she When they entered the great hall, Bessie dressed in a dress of pure white, and her aunt in the green delaine.

She thought of the handsome young man Charlie Grey, who had once been her lover, who had slept so many years in the old churchyard.

He disposed of the crops as soon as they were harvested, sold the stock, and saw that he had no desire but to turn everything into money. William Brent heard rumors of the goings-on at Muller's castle and returned to look after his master's interests. Until the last moment, he regularly sent reports to Muller's family in New York about the prosperity of the estate, so that the truth came home to them with crushing force.

Bonaparte returned in triumph and took possession of the throne vacated by Louis XVIII that same day, March 2, 1815. The Muller mansion still stands, a fitting relic of the hopes, fears, joys and sorrows of Louis Ana the Muller.

In the first place, if we want to get something from it, we have to bring something to it, and that something is ourselves. We must come, too, with thoughtful, open-ended prefaces, and with a definite end in view. The world of letters is so big and wide and has so many paths that the little reader is almost certain to get lost in it.

Mabie says, ': It is of little importance how much or how little of its specific information or statement we take away from a book, so long as through it we gain a new view of life." But we should remember that taste must is cultivated, and we don't always have to read what is most attractive at first glance.

How long will he be able to pursue it before poems about the flowers come to him, and he not only sees the different parts of the flower he analyzes, but he catches inspiration from the poets and, for the time being, lives in a fairy world, populated by the daisy, the rose and the cilandine. 34; Amidst thy tuft of hazel-trees Glistening in the blowing breeze, See him seated in ecstasies. Who can study about birds and their habits without thinking of poems like Wordsworth's "The Green Linnet" or "The Nightingale?".

If the relationships that exist between science and literature mean something to him, he does it. If the powers of air are chained to my chair, the million-colored bow is.” How much more does a student get from his study of physics if he applies poetry like this about the rainbow.

May the weft of my tent's thin roof have broken, The stars peek behind her and peek." The student now comes to the study of the moon, which is of great interest especially to lovers of science, and any thoughts they may have of Shelley's "Cloud". A student may allow this relation of science and literature to mean much to him in his work.

If he does this, he not only makes his studies more interesting, but he grasps the true scientific spirit without which no student can become a great scientist.

From whatever point of view Leo XIII's career may be viewed, it is an achievement without parallel. The temporal power for which he desired and strove, is as much beyond the reach of his successor as it is beyond his power. In his pontificate, Rome could not boast of accepting converted nations into its fold.

But he won a greater prize than the sovereign right to municipal control in the city of the Caesars. He may not have won the Protestant nations back to the Catholic faith, but he achieved a more powerful conquest. He disarmed the enmity of his ancient enemies, and around his Protestant, Freethinker, and Catholic members mourned like brothers at the grave of their common father.

As an advocate for the rights of working people and lower classes of people, he was famous. Some parts of his encyclical on labor read like a new declaration of the rights of men. At the time of the Spanish-American War, Pope Leo prayed and earnestly strove for peace.

Speaking in the Sistine Chapel, he declared with great emotion: "I prayed to God with all the strength of my being to avert this sad war and not allow my pontificate to end in the smoke of battle not." His prayer was not answered then, but he lived to see the peace he prayed for. Three times the silver hammer struck his ivory forehead; three times the call of the cardinal's voice fell on the dull, cold ear of death, and the Dean of the College of Cardinals announced to the waiting world - the Pope is dead. Away; but nothing can deprive him of the power which he has here made his own Being, and we believe him.

It is the little acts done well and honorably that make up our being, for he who despises little things must perish little by little. It is what enables man to think and do the best he is capable of. If we would mold our fortunes to success, we must have a dominating purpose to perform the duties which are ours to perform, "The hand of the industrious maketh rich," not merely the material riches of the world, but the infinitely higher possession of true manhood.

It is energy—that force which forces the life-blood into the veins of ambition, and makes the engine of life beat with a steady rhythm. It is that determination, which, despite defeat, makes one advance in the battle of life, and emerges victorious. Defeat to the energetic man is merely a stepping stone to success; for it is defeat that turns bone to flint, it is defeat that turns crack to muscle, it is defeat that makes men invincible.

We do not come into the world empty-handed, everyone is equipped with certain talents, but it is up to us. Miss Oakley, the teacher of English and expression, was unexpectedly detained at her home due to the serious illness of her mother, and Mrs. For the use of the gymnasium and instruction in class, a fee of one dollar per semester is imposed, and for the use of the gymnasium by those not in class, fifty cents per semester.

In the first match the substitutes were put as far inside as possible and although they played hard they could not prevent Cook from scoring. It is unfortunate that the games had to take place in such a manner, as no team can sustain playing two games on consecutive days, especially with such a powerful team as Cornell for the first. While this fact is to be regretted, it is something for which no one can be blamed.

In addition to the two literary programs, we had the pleasure of a joint reception with the Alfriedians in honor of the new students. Many new students were present and it looked like everyone had a great evening together. Both literary programs given were of a high order, but perhaps the two best articles published were the speech by Mr.

A few young ladies have been kind enough to help with our literary programs and we would like to thank them for their work.
