Trustee Beth Judson dies in airplane crash
We are all saddened by the death of Elizabeth Robinson Judson , an alumna and a member of the Alfred University Board of Trustees since 2002. Beth and her husband, James William Judson, Jr., died Tuesday, October 26, 2010, when the single-engine plane in which they were flying crashed near Corinth, Mississippi. An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the crash.
The thoughts and prayers of the campus community are with the Judson family in this tragedy.
Beth's service to her alma mater was distinctive. She chaired the Enrollment Management Committee and served on the Executive, Strategic Planning, Trusteeship and Academic Affairs committees of the Board. She is a founding member of the Women's Leadership Center Advisory Board, and was keynote speaker at the dedication of the Center.
As chair of the Enrollment Management Committee, "Beth was outstanding," said Earl Pierce, vice president for Enrollment Management. "She had a strong understanding of academics at Alfred University, in particular the School of Engineering through her professional consulting work and her ABET accreditation work. She took a strong interest in the work of the Enrollment Management Committee, and on her own time and at her own expense, attended several conferences and workshops related to her specific responsibilities with the committee."
Her death "is a tremendous loss for Alfred University," Mr. Pierce said. "Beth will truly be missed by so many in our University community."
The Judsons hosted the annual St. Patrick's Day gathering for Alfred University alumni at their home in Roswell, GA, a tradition they began in 2003.
A complete obituary will be sent when we have additional information.

Be a Part of the AU Alma Mater Video!
"Nestled away 'mid the Empire State hills..."
Imagine that in bluegrass style, or played on chromatic harmonica, or sung by an a cappella duet, or even shredded on heavy metal guitar.
The Alfred University Communications Office would like to produce a compilation video with various clips of people playing the AU Alma Mater. We will post it on YouTube as well as in the online Alfred magazine in early December.
What gave us the idea was a homemade video that was sent to us by Steve Levine of '58, in which he's playing the alma mater on clawhammer-style banjo.
We know that there are lots of other very talented alumni, faculty, and current students, and we want your video submissions! The more creative and entertaining your ideas are, the better.
All we ask is that the alma mater be recognizable during parts of the performance, and that the audio is not so loud that it overloads the microphone on your video camera. The camera can be stationary (on a tripod), or you can do a handheld approach provided it isn't too shaky. As for cameras, you can use pretty much anything from a Flip Video to a high quality HD camera. Formats we can work with are: AVI, MOV, and WMV. Submissions can be mailed on a CD (or uploaded via YouSendIt or similar online upload/download service)
Your submission can be in any key. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Nov. 12, 2010. Feel free to contact Rick McLay '89 in the Alfred University Communications Office (607.871.2103) if you have any questions or suggestions!
See the Link for more information.

Think Before You Speak Survey
The common use of anti-LGBT language is directly related to a growing problem - the bullying and harassment of LGBT students. Creating a safe environment for all students - LGBT and straight alike - begins with one simple act: thinking before you speak.
Alfred University students have created a short survey to assess how this language affects our campus and would very much like for you to participate.
To take the survey please visit the attached link.

Alternative Cinema Presents 'Nosferatu' in the Alfred Village Hall
Alternative Cinema will be showing the film 'Nosferatu' with live piano accompaniment by Peter O'Connor.
Please join us for this unique opportunity to view this film as it was meant to be seen.
"In 1921, director F.W. Murnau set out to make a horror film based on Bram Stoker's novel, `Dracula,' but was denied the rights to the property by Stoker's estate. Undeterred, however, Murnau merely changed the title to `Nosferatu,' the name of the title character to `Count Orlok,' then proceeded to make what has come to be considered nothing less than a classic of the silent film era. An unsettling film (especially for the times in which it was made), it is a faithful adaptation of Stoker's story, and brings images to the screen, the likes of which at the time, had never before been seen."
