Undergraduate Students - Financial Aid Deadline 3/15/12
IMPORTANT: MARCH 15, 2012 IS THE DEADLINE FOR FILING THE 2012-13 ALFRED UNIVERSITY FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION AND THE FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA).
If you will be an undergraduate student at AU for the 2012-13 academic year and do not have these
documents, please stop by the Financial Aid Office to pick them up. We are located in Alumni Hall and are open 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Health Insurance Fee for Spring 2012 Students
All incoming students enrolled in classes on the AU campus for Spring 2012 are required to carry health insurance coverage. This includes employees and their dependents.
Once registered, students are automatically enrolled in the Spring 2012 health insurance plan and a
$317 charge will be incurred.
If you have private health insurance, and DO NOT want to be automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan, you must WAIVE ENROLLMENT by completing the online waiver form at http://www.ahpcare.com/al....
If you waived out of the insurance plan in Fall 2011, please disregard this message.

New Accident/Incident/Near-miss Investigation Report for Campus
A new Accident/Near-miss form has been created to report any accident or near-miss on campus or while participating in a University-sponsored program. This new Accident/ Near-Miss form is to be used for anyone on campus (employees, students or visitors). Henceforth, please utilize the new form that is now posted on the Public Safety, EHS and Human Resources Web pages. It can be sent to you via email request, as well.
Deliver All Accident/Near-miss forms to Environmental Health and Safety (not Human Resources) at [email protected] or via fax 607-871-2086 immediately. Do not delay when reporting accidents or near-misses; all accidents and near-misses must be reported within 24 hours.
Should you have any questions about the form, please feel free to contact Cherise Haase, EHS Manager, at [email protected] or 607-871-2190. In the event of an emergency (i.e., medical, fire, disaster...), please call 911 or Public Safety at 607-871-2108.

Foreign Language Placement Exam Tuesday, Jan. 17
114 Seidlin, 4:30 p.m.
Exams are given in French, German, and Spanish.
Who needs to take the Placement Exam?
-Students who have taken more than two years of a language in high school and who intend to take the same language at AU MUST take the exam.
-Students who are bilingual or a native speaker of the language they wish to take or who have spoken the language at home.
-Students do NOT need to take the exam if they did not study a language previously or if they are planning to take a different language at AU.
-Students who wish to demonstrate proficiency in another language should contact the Modern Languages Office about procedures.
Results will be posted on Banner under Test Scores but only advisors can look them us.
*Please remember to bring your Student ID and a #2 pencil.*

Blackboard 9.1 Upgrade Complete
ITS is pleased to announce that AU has completed its upgrade to Blackboard 9.1. Some additional tools are available, including wikis and YouTube mashups. Some existing features, such as the grade center, have been improved. However, this is not a major upgrade and the user experience should remain the same.
Training for faculty and staff will be available throughout Spring semester. Trainings will be announced in Alfred Today and will also be available by appointment.

Bass Player Wanted
Attention Bassists! The AU Jazz Band is seeking a proficient bassist to join the group. Must be able to read music. Jazz experience preferred, but not necessary. Experience on electric and upright bass a bonus!
The AU Jazz Band is an impressive and strong musical group on campus. Music includes swing, bebop, funk, Latin, and more!
Rehearsals are Mondays, 7:15-8:45 p.m., and Wednesdays, 5:30-7 p.m. All rehearsals are in Miller 302.

Discounted rates at Swain for AU faculty, staff and students
Swain is extending discounted rates for Alfred University Faculty, Staff and their families plus AU Students. University employees and their families and AU students may ski at Swain Resort any day after 3 pm at reduced rates. New packages added this year include an 8 pack for tubing or skiing.
In order to participate in the program please register with Judith Green. Special incentive rates are available through Dec 9th. Discounted rates available through the ski season.

AU Symphonic Band
Join the Alfred University Symphonic Band! Open to all levels of musicians. We have instruments available on a "first come, first served" basis.
This semester, the Symphonic Band will be performing:
"Jungle Dance," by Brian Balmages
"Dusk," by Steven Bryan;
"Russian Sailors' Dance," by Reinhold Gliere
"First Suite in Eb," by Gustav Holst
"The Lord of the Rings, Movement V, 'Hobbits,' " by Johan de Meij
"Ammerland," by Jacob de Haan
"Vesuvius," by Frank Ticheli.
Our first rehearsal will be this Tuesday (first day of classes), Jan. 17, 5:30-7 p.m. in Miller 302. There are no auditions for the Symphonic Band.
Symphonic Band meets 5:30-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 302 of the Miller Performing Arts Center.

Join us in a Day of Service to commemorate the life and service of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Saturday Jan. 21, 2012. Registration will be held at the Fasano House (Alumni House on the corner of Pine & Main) from 8:30-9 a.m. Projects will take place at various locations in Alfred, Wellsville, and Hornell from approximately 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Transportation will be provided.

That's why local members of the nonprofit Disabled American Veterans (D-A-V) will present a veterans information seminar from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Living Faith Free Methodist Church, 1907 Center Road, West Seneca, New York. Like all D-A-V services, this seminar is free to all veterans and members of their families.

This library-sponsored film is free and open to the general public.
