present, "Prime Numbers and the Riemann Zeta Function." Pizza and soda will be served. All are welcome to attend.

Abstract: Being recognized by Hilbert as one of the most important unsolved problems of our time, Problem 8 -- the Riemann Hypothesis -- is arguably one of the most famous problems in mathematics.

It has withstood the efforts of the most powerful minds in mathematics for centuries. It has influences in physics, biology, chaos, probability, computer science, and, of course, mathematics, but what is it?

In this talk, we will discuss the importance of prime numbers and the pivotal role they share with the Riemann Zeta function and Riemann Hypothesis. This talk is intended to be relatively accessible.

PAUSE

Exhibition Dates: Thursday, Oct. 4-Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 Closing Reception: Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012

Time: 4:30 - 6 p.m.

Location: Schein-Joseph Museum

Museum Hours: Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Saturday through Tuesday and some holidays.

This special exhibition involves 18 pieces from the permanent collection. They have a common visual softness - a pillowy, rounded feel that along with their complexity in form, color and intent hope to give you pause. Each piece necessitates a closer look. They range in size from Christine Federighi's tiny 2 -1/2 inches high landscape to Giselle Hicks' sculpture 'embedded' that is 7 feet in depth.

The majority of these ceramic pieces have been made with off-the-wheel techniques utilizing the processes of slab building, pinching, and casting. The surfaces are also diverse with detailed drawings, decals, and finger marks, while others are crisp and glossy with no evidence of the human hand.

Included are work by artists J. David Broudo, Christine Federighi, Wayne Higby, Ken Little, David Shaner, Robert Sperry, Toshiko Takaezu and Robert Winokur; MFA Gloryhole work by Giselle Hicks, Jae Won Lee, Jeffrey Kaller, Sinisa Kukec, and Katherine West; and selections from the visiting artist collection by Anton Reijnders and Elsa Sahal.

In addition there are historic Chinese pieces.

2012 Swine Flu Update/Flu Shot Clinic

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning about a new strain of Swine Flu called H3N2v. While this current virus seems to be only infecting humans with direct contact with infected swine, there has been limited human-to-human transmission. See the CDC website for more information.

Use caution when attending the county and state fairs; take the time to wash your hands after you come in contact with swine. There is no hazard from eating pork that is properly handled and cooked.

It is recommended that at all people over the age of 6 months old get a flu vaccination every year.

The 2011-12 vaccinations are gone now but, the 2012-13 vaccinations will become available this fall.

Alfred University will host a vaccination clinic, Oct. 3 from 10-2 pm at Powell Campus Center in the McNamara Room. The vaccination will also be available at Health Services by appointment for students only.

The risk of infection and spread of influenza viruses between people, including H3N2v, can be reduced by taking a combination of actions. CDC recommends you take everyday preventive actions, including:

o Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. (Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.)

o Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand rub may be used.

o Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

(6)

o Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

o If you are sick, stay home from work or school until your illness is over.

o Students can call AU Health Services if you have any symptoms or questions at 607.871.2400 Employees can contact EH&S for additional information or community clinic dates at 607.871.2190 Link: Swine Flu Fact Sheet
