A second version of the exhibit was assembled for local schools and served as the basis for educational programs (one of . organized by the First Lady). The exhibit will eventually reside in the new White House. However, by engaging people in their presentation—the people featured as well as the visitors—the Festival can enable the public's understanding of its fellow citizens.

The second initiative is the creation of the Smithsonian Collection of Traditional Crafts, solicited from master craftsmen from across the United States. The interactive nature of the medium makes it a natural way to present a sampling of the Festival's rich audio, photo, video and text archives.

Most Cape Verdeans in the United States are familiar with spellings that use the standard Portuguese system of representative sounds. Because we hope that our written material on Cape Verde will continue to be referred to for years to come, we have chosen to use the suggested standard spelling herein.

Caboverdiana, from Cambridge, and the New Cape Verdean Tunes, from Pawtucket; religious news, poetry and opinion are published regularly in Boston, Aquipelago and Parol. Fernandes, the elected deputy of the National Assembly of Cape Verde, represents the Cape Verdean immigrant community.

TRANSNATIONAL NATIONALITY

Before the termination of the organization. For financial reasons in 1978, the bimonthly tabloid had a circulation of 10,000, was 36 pages long, and featured regular contributions from writers from the Cape Verdean community on four continents.

The fertile region of Hana has seen a revival of local traditions that all but disappeared in the 19th century. The center of this folkloric revival is the town of Roznov, where the Wallachia Open-Air Museum demonstrates local folk arts to half a million visitors every spring and summer. Along the Slovakian border lies the Hornacko region, which often consists of villages where traditional folklore, especially music and dance, is less influenced by contemporary forms.

Western Silesia, including the town of Opava, was once a cosmopolitan region inhabited by Czechs, Poles and Germans. While each region of the Czech Republic has its own distinct folk culture, certain regional folk songs have gained national status. Caroling and other folklore festivals are still common in early January to honor the Three Kings of the Epiphany.

The same Jifi Pavlica, who mainly performs traditional folk music from the Moravian region of Dolhacko with his band Hradisfan, also took part in the album Vlasta Redl AC Flek + /in Pavlica Hradisfan (1994). In general, the more pronounced the folk elements in the music described in this article, the greater its popularity and the wider the appreciation of its performers with listeners. However, many sought land and farming opportunities in the Midwest and Southwestern states.

In the 1970s, Heugen began celebrating an annual Czech-American festival. The festivities begin with a parade led by a giant model poppy seed truck. The egg white sheen that coats the cakes is often applied with homemade goose feather brushes that hang in the Tomesh family's kitchens. In America in the 1920s, regional groups led by Romy Gosz and "Whoopee John" Wilfahrt coined a new Czech-American polka stylethat.

Others were bolder; they continued to grow flowers in carefully hidden patches behind their barns. Mother had a hundred geese, and we had to pluck a great pile of feathers every day." The construction phases of the festival program .. the Czech lands of Bohemia, the east-leaning lands of Moravia and Silesia, and the easternmost provinces of Slovakia) peacefully separated into two separate countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The festival program provided an opportunity for Czech scholars to re-examine and re-evaluate folklore traditions such as Easter egg decorating, puppetry, dulcimer bands and bagpipe ensembles in the light of the socio-political changes transforming their society. Indeed, it is possible that traditions such as national dance and regional costume functioned as national, at least initially.

The members of the Moravian singing group Polajka portray this tradition as part of the ongoing revival of folklore in the Wallachia region. In order for the communists to pursue their particular goals, it was a fact that they simultaneously served as a mechanism of cultural resistance.

Many are involved in the preservation of the language in the tribe, and music and church work allow them to combine their interests in the preservation of culture with their daily care for the church. They also sing war songs and dance songs (Dove and Duck) commonly associated with southeastern tribes. In the Southern Plains and Northwest, women have always sung social dance songs known as "49 songs" or Owl dance songs.

Competitive singing, as in Inuit throat singing, was practiced by both men and women on the Northwest Coast and among Inuit and other Arctic peoples. As a living tradition, however, women everywhere sing games of chance for a game of hand, stick or dice.

THE OLD BELIEVERS

The first Old Believers came to North America around 1885 from Suwalki in Poland (then a western province of the Russian Empire) and from the villages around Minsk. All belonged to Pomortsy. soglasie, the largest single group of Old Believers without priests in Russia who practiced marriage. The second largest settlement of Russian Old Believers in the United States was formed during the 1960s around Woodburn, Oregon.

In the 1960s, they settled in Oregon with the help of the Tolstoy Foundation in New York. The youngest community of Old Believers in the United States branched off from the Oregon group about ten years ago and settled on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. After the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad rescinded its excommunication of the Old Believers in the 1970s, a large portion of the Old Believer community in Erie accepted the priesthood and fellowship of that church.

The Independent Russian Orthodox Church Abroad was founded in the United States after the October Revolution of 1917.). The Nekrasovs are descendants of those Old Believers who settled among the Don Cossacks in the steppes along the Don River in southern Russia. The Cossacks were an independent, peasant military unit that guarded Russia's southern borders. Some of the Nekrasov families did not want to return to Russia and came to various parts of the United States, including Woodburn, Oregon.

MUSIC IN TWO WORLDS

Singing serves many fictions, one of which is the creation of a historical continuum: traditional psalms, hymns, and hymns. The Old Believers see their special mission as the preservation of the pre-Nikonian liturgical chant, the znamennyi. Some communities in Russia and the United States still preserve the knowledge of the zna-mennyi from manuscript books and a medieval form of its notation by neums.

Moreover, Molokans generally welcomed the opportunity to borrow new tunes and turn any tune they liked into their own hymn. Melodic hits, including songs from Soviet films and popular American songs, left traces in the repertoire of Molokans ("Amazing Grace It's the Last Rose of. Forthem, keeping old songs in active memory was one of the most important strategies for preserving their Russian roots and history .
