IMPROVE THE STUDENT'S READING SKILLS BY THE NEUROLOGICAL IMPRESS METHOD (NIM) IN GRADE EIGHT IN SMP. The aim of this study was to know whether using the Neurological Impress Method (NIM) can improve the reading skills of the eighth graders of SMP PGRI 1 Batanghari. Based on the above data, it can be concluded that the use of the Neurological Impress Method (NIM) in reading helps learners gain confidence and understanding in descriptive text.

Oladele,” The Efficacy of Neurological Impress Method and Repeated Reading on Reading Fluency of Children with Learning Disabilities in Oyo State, Nigeria, (published by International Journal of Social, Behavioral, Educational, Economic, Business and Industrial Engineering, Nigeria, 2013). The Neurological Impress Method is an imposing name for a simple learning technique to improve reading comprehension.

Therrien states that three other fluency strategies evolved out of the Neurological Impress method: assisted reading and reading while listening. Based on the above quotes, it can be inferred that The Neurological Impress Method involves a student's vision, hearing. 29Hadi.M.Abdi, “Investigating the reading effectiveness through the neurological impression method on mentally retarded male students' reading development in the first year of professional skills course in Boroujerd City, p.

Action Hyphotesis

  • Independent Variable
  • Dependent Variable
  • Subject of the Research

The teacher reads the passage aloud - first alone, then with the students singing along. The teacher lowers her voice and lets the students take the lead by reading the passage aloud. In this study, the author used the Neurological Impress method to observe the reading ability of the eighth grade students of SMP PGRI 1 Batanghari.

In addition, the author will collect the data using oral tests. This test is also to know as much as possible in students' reading skills. Dependent variable is the variable that is observed and measured to determine the effect of independent variable. It can be defined as knowledge to identify the text that students have read.

Research Prosedure

McNif states that action research is the name for a certain way of researching one's own language.37 This means that action research is a practical way of looking at your practice to see if it is what you think it should be. In addition, Donald Ary said that action research is a process to improve education by incorporating change and involves teachers participating in improving their own practice.38 This means that action research is a process in education where the teacher is not the usual thing that the teacher do when thinking about teaching. Action research takes place through a dynamic and complementary process consisting of four essential "moments" of planning, action, observation and reflection. 39.

39 Anne Burns, Doing Action Research in English Language Teaching: A Guide for Practitioners, (New York: Routledge, 2010), p. Both of the above schemes imply that action research is problem solving that aims to bring about change and improvement in practice. So, the researcher will provide an action plan to solve the problem in teaching and improving students' reading skills using the neurological impression method (NIM).

Action Plan

Conducting the action research by doing research in the class, according to the lesson plan that was made and the researcher also taught the students in the class. The researcher was the observation and the teacher will evaluate the result of students' test. The researcher made the conclusion from the result of all data and the test.

Planning is the first step in any activity, researcher explains what, why, when, where, who and how the action is performed. The teacher will ask the students one by one and choose the class. In this observation, the researcher observed the activity of the students in the learning process and recorded them using notes.

So, in research, the researcher has two roles as an observer and as an object of research. In this phase, the researcher and the collaborator investigated all the actions that took place in the learning process. Reflection included analysis, synthesis and evaluation of the result of observation towards the action taken.

The teacher explains what the neurological impression method is in reading and how to do the neurological impression method, such as the steps of the neurological impression method and the advantages of the neurological impression method. The teacher asking and giving the idea or topic to the student, choose students one by one to do a neurological impression method in front of the class. In this observation, the researcher observed the students' activity in the learning process and recorded using the note.

Thus, in the research the researcher has two roles as observer and as object of research.

Data Collection Technique

  • Test

It is to find out if there is significant difference between pre-test and post-test. In this research, the researcher will observe the behavior of the students and the activities of the students in the learning process to know how the learning process will take place. By conducting the observation, the research will create the observation sheet that contains a list of the students'.

The researcher will use documents which are obtained from the school data such as the total number of students, teachers and the condition of the school. In order to collect the data to be more accurate, the researcher will use field notes to facilitate data analysis.

Data Analysis Method

At the eight classes of SMP PGRI 1 Batanghari, the minimum mastery criterion (MMC) for English subject is 65. If there are some students who do not succeed in cycle 1, the researcher will have to complete cycle 2. If the students in cycle 2 are successful, then the cycles will be stopped because students must achieve the minimum criteria for mastery.

To obtain the percentage of the class that passes the minimum mastery criteria (MMC) of 65, use the formula:41.

Indicators of Succes

  • Description of Research Location
  • Description of the Research

So that was the reason why the researcher used the Neurological Impress Method (NIM) to improve students' reading skills. The researcher was motivated and informed the students about the activities in the next meeting. After giving the second treatment, the researcher gave the students the first post-test.

The post-test was done to know how the students' reading skills were given after the treatment. In the learning process, there are four used and mentioned to know the students' activity. From the results of pre- and post-test I, we knew that there was an improvement in the students' final scores.

Based on the table above, it can be seen that the average score of students in post-test II was 70.19. This table is to describe the comparison of students' scores in post-test I and post-test II. After doing the pre-test, the researcher gave the treatment to the students of cycle I.

From the result of the students' score in pre-test and post-test I, there was an improvement from the students' result score. Based on the results of the students' scores from post-test II, it could be concluded that there were improved scores. The students' scores for Pre-test, Post-test in Cycle I and Post-test Cycle II.

Based on the result of the pre-test, post-test I and post-test II, it was revealed that there has been a significant positive improvement of the students. Based on the graph above, it can be concluded that the Neurological Impress Method (NIM) can improve students' reading skills. It was clear that the Neurological Impress Method (NIM) could be used to improve students' reading skills.
