USING A SHORT STORY TO INCREASE THE READING COMPREHENSION OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS 2. The aim of this research is to determine whether the use of a short story could improve the reading comprehension of eighth grade junior high school students. school 2 batanghari east lampung. This research is done in collaboration with an English teacher at batanghari east lampung high school.

He gave the researcher a blessing and mercy to complete this thesis titled “using short story to improve the reading comprehension of students in the eighth grade of Junior High School 2 Batanghari east lampung”. Widhiya Ninsiana, M. Hum as a sponsor who contributed their expertise and ideas to help the researcher. Ahmad Subhan Roza, M.Sc. Pd as a co-sponsor who gave his time and guidance throughout so that the researcher could complete this thesis.

The researcher also thanks her to her beloved family and all her friends who have given support and spirit so that the writer could finish this article. Finally, the researcher welcomes any suggestions and critics for the improvement of this bachelor's thesis, and hopefully this article can contribute something to the improvement of English teaching and learning in general and useful for her and all the readers.

The author conducted pre-survey on August 11, 2016, such as (1) the students have low motivation to learn English, especially in reading. The table 1 below is the result of the students' English reading test of pre-recording at class C of the Eighth Grade of Junior High School. Referring to the data above, it can be assumed that the students have low reading scores.

Short story refers to a work of fiction usually written in prose, usually in narrative format. Based on the identification above, the author focuses on the fact that the students have low reading comprehension in the learning process. Therefore, the writer limits the problem by using short stories to increase students' reading comprehension in the eighth junior high school 2 Batanghari East Lampung, because the students have low reading comprehension, so they still find it difficult to practice reading comprehension.

Can short story increase the students' reading comprehension in English of the eighth grade of Junior High School 2 Batanghari Lampung Timur.

A reading model is a graphical attempt "to depict how an individual perceives a word, processes a clause, and understands a text." This means that reading describes the people to process a word and sentences and analyze them. This is done to know whether the students have understood the content of the reading text or not, the teacher will give the questions to the students about the text. In this case, reading activity can be combined with speaking activity if the students answer orally.

The students can write their answers or copy some of the statements or certain sentences from the text. 9. Helping the students to become independent readers is the effort for the students' linguistic competence development. 10. In addition, it gives more attention to the affective nature of the students when they engage with the text. Reading skills depend on the students' ability to read a passage aloud quickly, with expression and inflection appropriate to the material.

To gain insight into the students' reading comprehension, the researcher did a pre-test consisting of 20 multiple-choice tasks. After that, the teacher told a short narrative story titled "The Lost Cater Pillar" and asked them to read it. And then the researcher gave the post-test to know the increase in cycle I. The table below shows the result of the student score in the post-test cycle I:.

The students' activities in cycle II showed almost all the students active in the teaching learning process. In cycle II, the students were also active in answering the question based on the story. RESULT OF THE RESEARCH AND INTERPRETATION31

Description of Finding

Based on the result of observational learning process in cycle II, it can be said that the students' reading comprehension has reached the minimum standard. Based on the table of students' observation in Cycle I and Cycle II, we could see that the students' activities increased.

Interpretation

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Conclusion

Based on the result of the analysis of Chapter 4, it can be seen that in cycle 1 the average score of pre-test cycle I was 56.52 and the average of post-test in cycle I 66.52. The use of short story in the teaching of reading, especially reading comprehension, can improve the students' reading comprehension at the Eighth Grade of junior high school 2 Batanghari east Lampung. The students are more interested because the story is short enough to be read.

Suggestion

On the other hand, the teacher must prepare a good medium, method or strategy, which must correspond to the curriculum and the material. The principal should pay more attention to the teacher and students in the learning process, especially English. The teacher asks the students to answer a question about the text and asks them to discuss.
