The researcher wants to know about; whether there is effectiveness of Mind Mapping Strategy on Descriptive Speaking Ability of Students in Class Ten of Kartikatama Higher Secondary School.

Problem Limitation

Most of the students also have problems to express their idea in descriptive text because most of them have a limited vocabulary.

Problem Formulation

Objective and Benefits of the Study

In addition, this research is an inspiration for the teachers at Kartikatama Metro Higher Secondary School to teach the subject of speaking. The researcher may use this research as a requirement for an undergraduate thesis at his campus.

Theoritical Review

According to Richard, “The functions of speaking are classified into three types; they are speaking as interaction, speaking as transaction and speaking as performance.7 Each of these speaking activities is quite distinct in terms of form and function and requires different teaching approaches”. Not only that, but there is also an expert explaining again about mind mapping. In addition, mind maps are graphic tool used to collect, create, manage and exchange information.

This means that mind mapping can make us more interested in elaborating or explaining something about something. In short, learning by using mind mapping will make students more happy to study English. Teaching descriptive speaking is not easy, but to pass it we use the appropriate way, e.g. as a mind mapping strategy.

In teaching descriptive speaking, the process of using mind mapping strategy the researcher gives the word or theme to the students. The researcher makes the procedure to teach descriptive speaking ability by using mind map strategy. The teacher asks the students to make a mind map based on the theme or clue given by the teacher.

The Theoritical Framework and Paradigm 1. The Theoretical Framework

  • Paradigm

In addition, the student must master four basic skills in English; listening, reading, speaking and writing. Speaking is one of the language skills that are important for direct communication in spoken words to get some information or to express ideas, thoughts and feelings to writers or to the listener by a spoken symbol for the listener to understand the information. Here, the student is expected to be able to express their ideas in spoken form.

If the researcher uses the mind map correctly, the descriptive speaking ability of the students will be good. On the other hand, if the research does not use mind mapping properly, the students' spoken description will be poor. Then the impact score itself produces three categories, i.e. good, fair and bad.

Hypothesis of Research

There is no positive and significant impact of using mind mapping strategy on the speaking ability of students in class ten of Kartikatama Metro Higher Secondary School.

RESEARCH METHODRESEARCH METHOD

Research Design

  • Sample
  • Sampling Technique

To collect the data, the researcher will administer a pre-test before treatment and post-test after treatment. The researcher uses quasi-experimental design to know the effectiveness of using mind mapping strategy (X) in students' descriptive speaking ability (Y) through a treatment. T2 : The students' ability to make description using a mind map after following the treatment (post-test grade).

Population is an individual or group that represents all members of a particular group or category of interest.29 The population of this research is the tenth grade students of Kartikatama Metro Higher Secondary School. A sample is a subset of the population that is taken as a representative of the entire population.30 In this research, the researcher chooses class X5 in Kartikatama Metro Senior Secondary School as a sample which consists of 25 students, because the criteria of students in class X5 e included in the criteria that will be recognized by the researcher. In this research, the researcher uses purposive group sampling technique because the researcher has the focus of the class to be observed.

This sampling technique is used to know the impact of mind mapping strategy on their speaking ability.

The Operational Definition of Variables

The Mind Map method of storing and retrieving information follows the same principles and is designed to work in synergy with your brain, meaning your knowledge levels will increase the more you use them. Effective note taking is not about slavishly reproducing everything that has been said, it is a selective process. 31. The dependent variable is the variable that is observed and measured to determine the effect of the independent.

The dependent variable of this research is the students' speaking ability in the tenth grade of Senior High School Kartikatama Metro in the academic year 2015/2016. In this research, the student can exploit their ideas with a good speaking, especially descriptive monologue. The student will be scored by rubric measurement of descriptive speaking ability categories including fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy and comprehension.

Pronunciation 3(good) Occasional errors in pronunciation in some inconsistencies of rhythm, intonation and pronunciation, but understanding is not impaired.

Data Collection Method

The researcher uses this method to get detailed information and process of the event while researching Kartikatama Metro Senior High School. Tendean Road, South Metro and only observes the facilities and infrastructures in that school. The researcher uses pre-test and post-test as a data collection method to measure students' descriptive speaking ability using speaking as an oral test.

The pre-test was given to the students in the first meeting to find out the speaking ability of the students. The speaking test is about the student having to make a monologue describing the title they receive from the researcher and at least consist of 10 sentences. This test is chosen by the researcher because to know the students' successful learning results during the tenth grade, especially in the descriptive speaking skill and how the high mind mapping strategy affects their descriptive speaking skill.

Suharsimi defines documentation as the method used to get information from written languages or documents, such as books, magazine, rule, note and others.35 The researcher uses documentation method to get the detailed information about the condition in the school, such as; the history of the school, the teacher.

In the first meeting of this research, the researcher conducted pre-tests to find out the initial difference between the class that has the same level. Source: The result of pre-test using mind mapping strategy for students' descriptive speaking ability on 16 May 2015/2016. The graph of table frequency distribution above describes that the result of the student's score of post-test.

In short, it can be concluded that the students' speaking ability in the pre-test is low. Source: Post-Test Score Using Mind Mapping Strategy to Students' Descriptive Speaking Ability on 21 May 2015/2016. It means that the result of descriptive speaking ability of students after using mind map was satisfactory.

The differences between pre-test and post-test in students' descriptive speaking ability in class X 5.

Discussion

It can be inferred that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected, it means that there was effectiveness of mind mapping strategy towards students' speaking ability at SMA Kartikatama Metro in academic year 2015/2016. In contrast, if the use of mind mapping strategy is low, the degree of descriptive speaking ability is also low. Almost all of the student's perception of the effect of their descriptive speaking ability was positive.

The average score of descriptive speaking ability in the post-test is higher than the post-test. Given that the researcher has already written that mind mapping can affect students' speaking skills because mind mapping is a good strategy for teaching speaking. Students can create a mind map before they speak because a mind map can organize what they want to say.
