INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION

Background of The Study

It is clear that the students must have writing technique, without technique they will not be able to write well. From the epalaniton above, the researcher assumed that the students score low on writing skills.

Problem Formulation

In this study, the researcher will investigate whether the application of Nominal Group Technique has a positive effect on students' writing skills in descriptive text in the 8th graders of SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2017/2018.

Teaching descriptive text through the noun group technique Based on the procedure for teaching the noun group technique in the previous discussions. The teacher gives different topics to each group and gives thinking time before starting to apply the nominal group technique. Terminologically, there are many experts who have different definitions for nominal group technique, but the writer will take definitions.

According to Potter Nominal Group Technique is a time-efficient method of data collection, as a session usually lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours, and participants are asked to attend only one session.19. Based on the above explanation, the researcher can conclude that the nominal group is a small group discussion consisting of four to five. 19 Rachel Lennon et.al, The Nominal Group Technique: its use to explore the rewards and challenges of becoming a mental health nurse, ahead of the introduction of the All England Graduate Nursing Curriculum, (England: University of Southampton , 2012) ISSN p. 2.

Nominal group technique was introduced as a time when everyone could share their ideas and then discuss those ideas as a group. Jones, Using the nominal group technique to select the most appropriate topics for postgraduate research students' seminars, Australia: University of Wollongong, Vol. 24 Tünde Varga-Atkins, et al., The Nominal Group Technique – a practical guide for facilitators, Liverpool: University of Liverpool, October 201, p.4.

Theoretical Framework and Paradigm 1. Theoretical Framework

  • Paradigm

The need for all members to be able and comfortable expressing their ideas in writing and then communicating them verbally to the group. Therefore, the implementation of the nominal group technique is very important to create the motivation of students in writing to get good results in the learning process, and students will follow and participate seriously in the lesson. Descriptive writing is one of the basic competences to be achieved in English subject writing, which students have the ability to develop and produce written text with simple function.

If nominal group technique is effective in teaching descriptive text writing skill, it will have good influence on student's descriptive text writing skill. However, if nominal group technique is ineffective in teaching descriptive writing skill, then it will have no effect on student's descriptive writing skill. Based on the paradigm above, it can be inferred that if nominal group technique is used well in the teaching and learning process, the student's writing skill in descriptive text is good.

Thus, there is some positive and significant influence of the use of Nominal Group Technique on the student's writing skills in descriptive text. If it does not apply well, the student's writing skills in descriptive text are poor. Thus, there is no positive and significant influence of the use of the Nominal Group Technique on the student's writing skills in descriptive text.

RESEARCH METHOD RESEARCH METHOD

Sample

The sample of this research is students at SMPN 8 Metro Year of study The researcher took from VIII A which consists of 30 and VIII B which also consists of 30 students.

Sampling Technique

Independent Variable (X)

Dependent Variable (Y)

Moreover, based on explanation above, the researcher in this measurement knew the user's performance in the application of Nominal Group Technique on Writing Skill in Descriptive Text at the Eighth Grade of SMPN 8 Metro in the Academic Year of 2017/2018. From the table above, the researcher measures the result of the essay test by adding all the aspect based on the score obtained by the student. Test is some questions or exercise and other tools used to measure the skill, knowledge, intelligence, ability or talent possessed by individual or group.

On the other hand, this research is a true experimental design research with the application of pre-test and post-test group design. Type of test was essay test which the teacher asks the students to make a descriptive text. The pre-test was held in the first meeting before treatment was done to know the ability of the students before doing the action research.

While the post-test was held in the last meeting after treatments were done to find out if the treatment made any contribution to the students'.

Second, to investigate whether there is any significant impact of the use of the Nominal Group technique on the descriptive writing ability of students in the eighth grade of SMPN 8 Metro in the academic years, the researcher used the Chi-Square formula. According to Donal Ary, when dealing with nominal data, the most commonly used tests of significance are Chi-Square tests.

They compare observed frequencies and expected frequencies.42 It is used to examine the significant differences between observed frequencies and expected frequencies.

Interpretations

  • Interpretation of t observed
  • Interpretation of observed

After analyzing the data in hypothesis testing, the researcher found that the critical value of tobserved is 8.252. It can be concluded that there is a positive influence of the use of Nominal Group Technique on the students' descriptive writing skills at the Grade Eight of SMPN 8 Metro in the Academic Years of 2017/. The hypothesis applied in this current research is that there is a positive influence of the use of Nominal group technique in descriptive writing skill at the Grade Eight of SMPN 8 Metro in the Academic Year of 2017/2018.

It means that there is a positive influence of the use of the nominal group technique in the descriptive text for the eighth-grader SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2017/2018. We can conclude that in the eighth graders of SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2017/2018, the use of the nominal group technique has a significant impact on the skill of descriptive writing. The hypothesis used in this present research is that the use of the nominal group technique has a significant effect on the descriptive writing ability of eighth grade students of SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2017/2018.

This means that there is a significant influence of using Nominal Group Technique on the students' descriptive writing skills at grade eight in SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2017/2018. In other words, there is a positive and significant influence of using Nominal Group Technique on students' descriptive writing skill at eighth grade in SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2017/ 2018. So that nominal group technique has a positive influence on students' descriptive writing skill at eighth grade in SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year.

Limitations

Discussions caused by this technique can solve the problem about students' problems in developing ideas. Students can more easily generate their ideas in their writing because they get the imagination from their friends' ideas. So that Nominal Group Technique has a positive impact on the descriptive writing skills of the students of the 8th grader of SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2017/2018.

This survey was conducted among the eighth graders of SMPN 8 Metro in the academic year 2018, so the result was limited to this grade in this school only. After analyzing the data using the t-test formula, the researcher found that the critical value of the observed is 8.252. So this is an interpolation and as a result df 58 shows that the critical value of ttable is by 5%.

In addition, after analyzing the data with the chi-square formula, the researcher found that the critical value of the observed is 22.094. In addition, the data confirms that the observed is higher than the table, or it can be written as 5.991. This means that there is a positive and significant influence of using the nominal group technique on students' descriptive writing ability in the eighth graders of SMPN 8 Metro during the academic years.
