This was evidenced by the mean score of the pretest students being 41.42, which was placed in the very poor category, while the mean posttest student score was 68.33, which was placed in the fair category. This chapter discusses the background, statement of the problem, objective of the research, significance of the research and scope of the research.

Background

That is why the researcher was tried with this Self Talk strategy to verify whether the speaking skill of the students was effective or not. Rely on the benefits and implemented by self talk strategy and according to researcher this strategy can be used in.

In this chapter consists of previous of related research findings, concept of speaking and in concept explained about definition of speaking, types of speaking, component and problem of speaking, this chapter also explains about self-talk strategy used in this research, the elements of self-talk strategy in teaching speaking skills.

Previous of Related Studies

Chamot (1999) found that the self-talk strategy is a strategy that all people use when faced with a new situation and when performing familiar tasks and routines. Based on the above research, we can conclude that there is a similarity between those researchers who used self-talk.

There are two types of self-talk: positive self-talk and negative self-talk. Self-talk is one of the productive learning strategies that can be used directly by the students themselves.

Conceptual Framework

Self-talk is an activity to help students understand what the students are doing; Others defined self-talk as a strategy where the adult describes what the students are doing. There are two main purposes of self-talk (Barnhardt, 1997); the first is improving self-efficacy. According to research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, there are steps in the self-talk strategy: First, identify what the students want to achieve.

According to Hornby (1995:9), accuracy is the state of being correct or exact and without error, especially as a result of careful effort. In this research, the sample of the research is class VII.A consisting of 21 students. The researcher believes that class VII.A has many passive students with low speaking skills based on the observation made by the researcher.

The researcher is of the opinion that class VII.A has some students which makes it easier for the researcher to collect the data.

The objective of the post-test was to find out whether the self-talk strategy improves students' speaking skills or not.

Data Analysis

Findings

The Improvement of the Student’s Accuracy in Speaking Skill

Table 4.1 shows that the score of students on the post-test improved after applying the Self Talk strategy in teaching speaking skills.

The Improvement of the Students’ Fluency in Speaking Skill

Where the average score of the students in the post-test is (70.95), which is classified as a fairly good category. This means that students' speaking accuracy improves from a poor category to a fairly good category. In addition, the students' average fluency score in the pre-test (37.61) is placed in the poor category.

This means that students' speaking fluency also improves from a poor category to a fair category. And after calculating the result, the researcher finds that the improvement of students' speaking ability is 65.78%. It means that there was a sign between the pre-test and post-test score of the students in speaking ability through the application of Self-Speech Strategy.

The Improvement of The Students Accuracy in Speaking

The Improvement of the Students’ Fluency in Speaking

Student performance improves in speaking practice using the Self Talk Strategy. Was born on … thanks). in the pre-test, students are very bad at hesitation and pauses. The results of the students' fluency test can be seen in the following:

Based on the findings, the use of Self-Speaking Strategy in class, the data collected through the test as explained in the previous findings section, shows that the students' speaking skills have improved significantly. Next to the post-test, the researcher finds that the students are fair in the delivery of the material. It is indicated that the use of Self Talk Strategy contributes to improving the students' speaking skills.

Conclusions

In short: the application of Self Talk Strategy in teaching speaking skills is effective in improving the speaking skills of students.

Suggestions

Use of STS to improve the speaking skills of first grade students of SMAN 1 Libureng. Dengan bimbingan guru, siswa mengidentifikasi pola kalimat yang digunakan dalam ungkapan sapaan sesuai dengan uraian waktu. Dengan bimbingan guru, siswa mempelajari pola kalimat yang digunakan dalam ungkapan sapaan sesuai dengan gambaran waktu. Dengan bimbingan guru, siswa belajar cara melafalkan, intonasi dan menekankan ungkapan sapaan sesuai informasi waktu.

Dengan bimbingan guru, siswa mempraktikkan cara pengucapan, intonasi dan penekanan dalam ungkapan sapaan sesuai informasi waktu. Dengan bimbingan guru, siswa mengidentifikasi pola kalimat yang digunakan dalam ucapan selamat tinggal sesuai dengan gambaran waktunya. Dengan bimbingan guru, siswa belajar bagaimana mengucapkan, melafalkan dan menekankan ungkapan perpisahan dalam Pengolahan Informasi.
