Teaching English is improving the English subject with enjoyable media and easy to understand, especially speaking performance in this case. Based on the above discussion, the author would like to conduct a study on "Using Movies as Media to Improve Students' Argumentative Speaking Performance in the Eighth Grade Student of SMPN 1 Abung Semuli".

Therefore, the researcher limits the problem only on the use of films as media to improve students' speaking performance. The problem that will be studied in this research is formulated: “Can films be media to improve students' argumentative speaking performance in the eighth grade student of SMPN 1 Abung Semuli. And it hoped that the student can improve their argumentative speaking performance by learning to use films and develop their study to be successful.

And in future research I will use film as a media to teach argumentative speaking performance. The intensive focus on classroom speaking performance is focused on some phonological or grammatical aspects of the language. In this research, argumentative speaking performance can make students more confident to express their arguments and ideas in spoken language.

With argumentative speaking performances in class, the learning process can stimulate students' productive skills (speaking) because it makes students think about how they can explore their arguments or their ideas with language.

Data Collection Method

  • Observation
  • Documentation
  • Field Note

In this research, the researcher used the observation sheet, it is used to observe the students' activity in the classroom. The purpose of observation is to obtain data about the students and the teacher's activity later in the teaching learning process. Documentation as the method used to obtain information from the written source or document (for example: books, radio, news) of information.

Using documentation to obtain information and data from the school such as total students, teachers and the condition of SMP N 1 Abung Semuli.

Data Analysis Method

Moreover, in order to know the performance of the student after the test, the researcher will make a comparison between pre-test and post-test. Then the result is matched by Minimum Standard Criteria (MSC) at the school of at least 75. If there are some students who are not successful from cycle 1, the examiner will run cycle 2.

The minimum cycle for film as a medium is two cycles, if all students are successful from the 2nd cycle; the cycle can be stopped by the 2nd cycle. The formula for calculating the percentage of students who pass the MSC in each cycle is as follows: 45.

Indicator of Success

  • Acting

In the first meeting, the researcher used the text of the story to support the material before the given main argument topic. Identify students. a speaking performance in front of a researcher who is given a topic about argumentation. So, the researcher can compare that the successful students were more than the less successful students.

And then the researcher gives permission to other students to ask about their friends' achievements. The researcher divided the students into pairs, one of them talking about synopsis and the other about moral values. And then the researcher asked the students to make their argument about everything, after which the researcher gave them a few minutes to develop their argument.

And the researcher informed the students that there would be a test for the next meeting. In cycle 1, the researcher divided three meetings.. the observation was done from pre-activity to post-activity. The researcher can therefore compare that the successful students were more or less not successful students.

In the second cycle, the researcher and the teacher discussed and agreed on the lesson plan. In the first meeting, the researcher was given material so that the students understood more than cycle 1 and the material was about argumentation. In this meeting, the researcher focused on how the students .. gained an understanding of argumentative materials.

And the researcher informed the students that there would be a test for the next meeting. b). After playing back the last material, the researcher explained the direction of post-test 2. The researcher divided the students into pairs, one of them explained about synopsis and each other about moral values.

And then the researcher gives permission for other students to ask about the work done by their friends. So the researcher can compare that the active students were more or less not active students.
