The result of this research showed that the Mind Mapping technique had a positive role in improving the speaking performance of students among the eight classes of the 7 Metro State High School. Finally the researcher can realize this university thesis entitled "Using the Mind Mapping Technique to Improve the Speaking Performance of Students in the Eighth Grade of State Junior High School 7 METRO".

Background of the Study

The researcher assumes that the use of mind mapping technique in the teaching of speaking will help the students in their learning process. Based on the data above, it can be seen that of 27 students in the eighth grade of State Junior High School 7 Metro, the level of the students' speaking performance was low.

Objective and Benefits of the Study 1. Objective of the Study

The Purpose of Mind Mapping Technique

In the application of mind maps in the teaching process, it has a purpose to make the learning of English successful. The purpose of mind mapping technique is that the student will be able to memorize better so that it can help the students to speak performance. Mento et al noted that a number of managers made clear and engaging presentations using only a transparency of a mind map, without fumbling around with notes.23 The ability to summarize the presented material in such an effective way handled, was attributed to better recall of the information. because it is captured and stored in an integrated, radiating manner rather than linearly.

On another occasion, Mento also observed that a number of executive students made clear and engaging presentations using only a transparency of their mind map, without also fiddling around with notes.24. In short, brain mapping will help the students to improve their speaking performance and improve the presentation skills.

The Procedure of Mind Mapping Technique

Color and lines make the mind map more interesting and add energy for creative thinking, make students focus, help students focus and activate their brain. 27 Tee and Azman, International Journal of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences, Buzan Mind Mapping: An Efficient Technique for Note-Taking, Vol: 8, No: 1, 2014, p. 29.

Action Hypothesis

The Variable and Operational Definition of Variable

Speaking performance as a dependent variable is defined as constructed from someone's speaking ability that has been developed or practiced on a daily basis. The measuring instrument was an oral test and for a score from 0 to 100 to evaluate and measure the students' speaking performance. The student occasionally hesitates and repeats, but is generally able to maintain a flow of speech, although he may need occasional prompting.

Occasional pronunciation errors A few inconsistencies in rhythm, intonation and pronunciation, but understanding is not hindered. Mostly effective use of vocabulary for the task with some examples of inappropriateness. Some mistakes in the use of sentence structures and grammatical forms, but they don't get in the way of understanding.

The use of interactive strategies is generally adequate, but sometimes there is some difficulty in maintaining the interaction consistently.

The Research Setting

The Subject of the Research

Research Procedure

According to Kemmis and McTaggart, as cited by Anne Burns, action research is a dynamic and complementary process that consists of four essential phases such as planning, action, observation and reflection in a spiral system.32. In classroom action research, the researcher wants to carry out the research in two cycles, 1st and 2nd cycle. 33 McNiff Jean and Whitehead Jack, Action Research: Principles and Practice, Second Edition, (New York: Routledge Falmer Taylor & Francis Group, 2002), p. 41.

Based on the McNiff Jean and Whitehead Jack research design, the research steps encompass four phases in each cycle. The colleague observed the activities of the students, in this research the researcher would act as a teacher who applied the mind mapping technique to the discussion. In this step, the researcher observes the teaching learning process using an observation sheet.

If some students were unsuccessful from the 1st cycle, the researcher must conduct the 2nd cycle.

Data Collection Method

If all the students were successful from cycle 2, the cycle could only be stopped until cycle 2. In the research, the researcher gave the students two tests, they were pre-test and post-test. The test was an oral test and the subject was the eighth grade students of State Junior High School 7 Metro.

The tests would let us know about the students' achievements before and after the learning process. This test requires students to stand in front of the class to give their speaking performance. A post-test would be given at the last meeting after the treatments were completed to determine whether or not the treatment contributed to student achievement in the classroom.

During the observation, the researcher made some notes and a checklist to recheck the data.

Research Instrument

The researcher would use content validity so that the instrument has a good quality and the instrument is suitable for the focus of the research. Therefore, the researcher used content validity based on the syllabus and materials in the eighth grade of 7 Metro State High School in the academic year.

Indicator of Success

The Description of Research Location

State Junior High School 7 Metro was created from the change of State Technical School (ST Negeri) Metro, which was established in January 1963, initially located at Jl. In 1994, ST Negeri Metro became a Junior High School Skills Education Program (SMP Keterampilan), and changed to State Junior High School 7 Metro in 1999. In the 1999/2000 academic year, State Junior High School 7 Metro has a permanent teacher of 21 people and an administration of 3 people.

Over time, State High School 7 Metro began to be cleaned, both in the field of educational personnel, educational staff, and facilities and infrastructure that support the teaching and learning process, and now State High School 7 Metro has 45 educators . The number of students at 7 Metro State High School at each grade level is different. Learning activities for all students of State High School 7 Metro from classes IX, VIII and VII start from 07.15 to 14.00.

The state of the building in State Junior High School 7 metro is all in good condition and comfortable to use during teaching and learning activities.

Description of Research Result

So this was the reason why the researcher used Mind Mapping technique to improve the students' speaking performance. Based on the result of the pre-test score, the researcher identified and found the problems after taking the students' pre-test score. This means that in cycle 1 the students' performance could improve enough, but it was not yet successful.

The percentage of students' speaking performance results in pre-test and post-test 1. From the results of pre-test and post-test 1, we knew that there was an improvement in the students' results. Although there was an improvement in students' speaking performance, cycle 1 was not yet successful because only 7 students (25.93%) passed post-test 1.

Percentage score of students' speaking performance score in post-test 1 and post-test 2.

Interpretation

After analyzing the results of the students in the post-test of the 1st cycle, the researcher had to conduct the next cycle. From the results of the students' scores from the posttest 2, it could be concluded that the results improved. Comparison of the students' results in the English learning process before the test, after the test 1 and after the test 2 was successful in the 1st cycle, but the students' English learning process was successful in the 1st cycle, and the students.

The comparison of the students' speaking performance scores in pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2. Based on the result of pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2, it was known that there was a positive significant improvement of the students. Percentage of outcome scores of students' speaking performance in pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2.

It is supported by improvement in student scores from pre-test to post-test 1 and from post-test 1 to post-test 2.

Discussion

Based on the figure above, it can be inferred that Mind Mapping Technique could improve students' speaking performance. As a solution in teaching English, especially in speaking, the teacher must provide some techniques to make students interested and attentive so that they are not bored to catch the material. After the students were interested, the material provided by the teacher would be easier for the students to understand.

Based on the discussion above, we could conclude that the students felt comforted and active with the learning process, because most of the students showed good improvements in learning activities when the Mind Mapping Technique was applied in the learning process from cycle 1 up to cycle 2.

Conclusion

It could be a solution in teaching English especially in speaking subjects when the teacher has to give some techniques to make the students interested and attentive so that they were not bored to catch the material so that it would be easier for the students to understand. In addition, the researcher used the mind mapping technique, which could improve the students' speaking performance. The researcher gave a topic to the students, after which they created their mind mapping and presented it in front of the class.

After the 1st and 2nd cycle, the students' speaking performance improved because the researcher used the mind mapping technique.

Suggestions

The principle is supposed to give more motivation to the English teacher and students to make the students more excited in learning English.
