AU swimming and diving teams defeat visiting RIT 12/03/05

ALFRED, NY The Alfred University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept visiting RIT in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at Lebohner Pool Saturday afternoon. The men's team won 125-112, while the women prevailed 130-111.Sophomore Page Beecher (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) was a double-winner as the AU men remained perfect on the year with a 4-0 record (2-0 Empire 8). Beecher won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:59.33 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:56.56.Other winner for the men's team were: freshman Brian Agro/Grey,

ME/Cheverus) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:36.65); junior Brandon Striker (Caledonia, NY/York) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.53); freshman Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) in the 100-yard backstroke; and senior Brian Gotham (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.17).Other top swimmers for AU included sophomore Denis Egan (Maplewood, NJ/St. Peter's), second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle; senior Alex Crowell (Wayland, MA/ Wayland), second in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke; Baker, second in the 200-yard freestyle; Gotham, second in the 200-yard individual medley; and Striker, second in the 100-yard freestyle.The team of Baker, Gotham, Striker and Crowell won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.54.Winning two events each for the Alfred women's team were freshman Jessie Caccamo (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:20.62) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.15); and junior Erin Collins (Owego, NY/Owego), who swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.Other top swimmers for the women's team were junior Jessica White (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), first in the100-yard freestyle (59:45) and second in the 200-yard freestyle;

sophomore Nikki Williams (Radford, VA/Radford), second in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle; senior Rachel Saroka (Groton, NY/Groton), second in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke; senior Tara Mungro (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet), second in the 50-yard freestyle; freshman Kayln Follmer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore), second in the 100-yard butterfly; and senior Bonnie McDermott (Grand Island, NY/Mt. St. Mary), second in the 100-yard breaststroke.The team of White, Caccamo, Saroka and Mungro won the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:45.86 as Alfred improved to 3-2 on the year and evened its Empire 8 Conference record at 1-1.The AU men's and women's team compete next on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. at Empire 8 rival Ithaca College.
