Occupational data collected in the 1996 second wave of the longitudinal Survey of Employment and Unemployment Patterns were coded into ASCO Second Edition. Skill Level The skill level of an occupation is defined as a function of the scope and complexity of the range of tasks involved - the greater the scope and. There was considerable overlap in the skill level of many of the main ASCO First Edition groups.

An important aim of the review was therefore to devise a classification structure in which the main groups were more homogeneous in terms of skill level than in the first edition. The five skill levels in the ASCO Second Edition are defined in relation to the AQF levels as follows. A number of changes reflected in the ASCO Second Edition structure are the result of the rise and decline of occupations in the Australian labor market.

SKILL LEVEL The skill level of an occupation is a function of the range and complexity of the tasks. Tools and equipment used This variable includes the installations, machines or tools used in the performance of the tasks.

The stricter approach to applying the skill level criterion has resulted in changes in the way some occupations are classified in the ASCO Second Edition. Major groups at the same skill level are differentiated according to a broad application of the concept of skill specialization. An important change has been the reorganization of First Edition Big Group 5 Clerks and Big Group 6 Sales and Personal Service Workers into three big groups at different skill levels.

Other categories The set of codes is reserved for the remaining categories at the sub-main, secondary and classification unit group levels. Such responses are assigned an nfd code consisting of the four-digit unit group code followed by '-00'. Codes starting with zero are used to process responses that do not provide enough information to be coded at any level of structure.

FORMAT OF DEFINITIONS This publication contains definitions for the major, sub-major, minor, and unit groups and all occupations in the ASCO Second Edition. Main statement A concise description of the nature of the occupation, summarizing the most important activities carried out.
