Commentaries and other books, stereotype plates; Christian lawyer; expansion of Concern — branch in Cincinnati;. After some general statements concerning the number and character of the literary institutions then existing under the patronage of the Methodist. This arose out of a consultation with the book agents and the editor of the Christian Advocate and journal, the latter of which had drawn up a constitution for.

In the great spiritual and moral objects surely contemplated by the benevolent institutions and Christian movements of the time, we have repeatedly declared our hearty and entire concurrence. Dissolution of the Bible Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which the concern has. Among those who had died this year was Enoch George, one of the bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

In the active discharge of the arduous duties of this office of high responsibility he continued until his death.

Dr. Adam Clarke was accused of introducing into his Commentary unauthorized criticisms upon the original text

As this was a heavy charge, and, if sustained, must impeach their moral character and Christian integrity, it was regarded as no more than a sacred duty we owed to their characters and to the Church, which delighted to honor them. , to save their memories. from this undeserved reproach. Indeed, we had reason to suspect that there was a combination among certain sects, if possible, to destroy our influence. This we deduced from the fact that the presses, under the control of Calvinist editors, in different parts of the country, almost simultaneously uttered the same language against Methodism, without at all mitigating the severity of their criticism by an acknowledgment of the good we had. been instrumental in implementing.

The Christian Spectator, a Quarterly Review conducted by an association of gentlemen connected with Yale College, in a "Review on the Economy of Methodism," commenced an insolent and unprovoked attack on our doctrine, discipline, and general economy, which was copied to others papers, accompanied by remarks hostile to our church, being untrue and unkind. This systematic and simultaneous attack on us as a church was carried out with reckless severity and led us to Indeed, it was by no means confined to argumentative attacks on our doctrines and customs, but the character of our ministers was attacked, their motives impugned, and they were.

Clarke, for the purpose of describing his usefulness as a most able and pious commentator on the Holy Scriptures. Wesley was also accused of mutilating the sacred text in such an obvious way as to make "nonsensical some of the clearest texts in the Bible."

Wesley also was accused of mutilating the sacred text in such a glaring manner as to make “nonsense of some of the plainest texts in the Bible,”

Wesley's Alteration: — But with the precious blood of Christ, as a Lamb without blemish and without spot; who indeed was foreseen before the creation of the world. Wesley, for some of them strike at the root of the peculiarities of their faith. According to the present translation and Calvinist interpretation of the text, it is brought to prove that Herod,.

The reader can now see the reason why our Calvinistic friends are so exceedingly dissatisfied with John Wesley, simply because he has rendered this text in such a way that we need not necessarily conclude that all this evil conduct of the persecutors and murderers of Jesus Christ is in accordance was with the predestination of God - although he only followed the Greek text, by retaining the infinitive form of the verb 'poiasai', to do; – while if he had done otherwise he might have been rightly accused, as we shall soon see that Beza will do as well, of corrupting the text. Those who "lifted up their voices" on this occasion said, referring to the second Psalm, "The kings of the earth rose up, and the rulers gathered themselves together against the Lord." Now if those infatuated people acted against the Lord, how could they at the same time fulfill his counsel and will? God had determined that when Jesus Christ would be manifested in the flesh, in addition to dying for the sins of the world, “signs and wonders would be done” by Him; that he should "reach out his hand to heal the sick," to restore sight to the blind, to raise the dead, etc.; for this purpose he was anointed, that he might do the things which should thus be done in the eternal council; and therefore the apostles, after saying that Herod and his wicked companions were gathered together to oppose the Lord's anointed, and to thwart this gracious determination of God, that as their wicked efforts had hitherto been defeated by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from heaven, death, that even now 'signs and wonders' may happen; that thus a full demonstration may be given to all that Jesus is the Christ, the true Messiah promised in the Old Testament.

It is probably on account of the manifest absurdities involved in the contrary, that Episcopius and many other commentators have been led to adopt a similar construction to that of Wesley. The Latin version of Montanus follows the plain English version and retains the infinitive form of the verb, Facere quaecumque, "to do" at all, &c. gone — in its version which is not found at all in the common Greek text, in hoc civitate, 'in this city.' The following is his translation of the two verses under consideration.

Indeed, we grant that the grammatical construction of the sentence, as the infinitive form of the verb may correspond to a singular or plural noun, does not. Perhaps they may think that because God was of the elect, “seen no unrighteousness in him”; but poor John Wesley, who is an Arminian reprobate, must have his name blotted out of the book of life. Now if anyone will show us a single text in Wesley's translation that invalidates or weakens in the smallest degree any of these essential truths of Jesus Christ, or diminishes His real Deity, or the unity in the Trinity of the Godhead, then will fail him as our leader in that regard; we will believe in that case that he has made a mistake and that he deserves the severe criticism and censure of his opponents.

Not only were the characters of Wesley and Clarke thus ungenerously assailed, but the integrity of our ministry also was called in question. The

Christian Spectator had said: “Nor can we even begin to speak here of the misrepresentations and many cunning devices by which the doctrine and discipline of Methodism are so zealously propagated.” This was a serious charge indeed. It was consciously assumed that we had enormous funds at our disposal, supporting our ministry independently of the people; that even these funds were so dexterously managed that our own people themselves did not know it; kept in ignorance by our 'cunningly devised artifices'.

Another complaint was brought against the manner in which our Church property was held. It was alleged that it was deeded to the General

This year also saw the launch of several missions to benefit the slave population in the states of South Carolina and Georgia. This included a population close to the city, many of whom were only temporary residents and generally deprived of the means of grace.

The Iroquois and Jonesborough missions of the Illinois Conference were also started this year. 5, 1831, states that about five hundred came, most of whom were members of the Church. And that the whole Church is preserved in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace.
