new material have made a number

matters worthy

As

in

our previous paper, the

first locality

mentioned

in the description of

new

species

may be considered

the

type

locality.

We

areunableto

make

the comparison,havingneither adults norlarvaeofthe

European

species. Theobald's comparisonof adults(Mon.

Culic,i,194, 1901),is inconclusive,especially without exact examination oflarvae.

We

therefore provisionally eliminate the

European names

from the

synonymy. Our

speciesrangesthroughoutthe eastern UnitedStates, from

New Hampshire and

OntariotoFlorida

and

Texas.

We

haveitalso from Cuba. Westernlocalitiesshould be discredited. Occasionalspeci-

mens

have the black wing-spots indistinct or absent.

We

believe that suchspecimens werethebasisof the recordsofthe

European

A.bifurcaius Linn, inAmerica andofTheobald's A.vxdkeri.

propose this

name

The

adultsresembleclosely those of/,infine

Dyar & Knab,

butdiffer intheornamentationof the thorax.

Ininfine thethorax is dark reddish

brown

with two white spots onthe disk,twoat thefrontmargin,faint,

and

whitishscales onthe scutellum;

In indoctum the thorax is dull

brown

with yellowish

and

white scales forming diff"use patches. Scholasticus Theobald isa true Culex. All the indoctum are from Trinidad; all theinfinefrom Santo

Domingo. The

there are four pecten teethonthetube,

which

reach nearlyto themiddle; the teeth are variable inshape, but

none

havethe longsec- ondaryspine

inourfigureofinsularius.

The comb

scales

have

the central spine longer and curved attip. Boththe head hairs are single.

We

haveplaced the types ofnanusCoquillettfromFlorida

and

alarge series taken

by

Dr. Cotiininthe

Bahamas

with pygvuca Theobald from Jamaica.

The

larvae,however,of thesemosquitoesarestill

unknown.

Mr.Urich hassent us fromTrinidad,two bredspecimens, the larvae of

which

agreewith our euplocamus(Journ.N.Y.Ent. Soc,xiv, 199, 1906),de- scribedfromCostaRica.

The

identificationofthe adult of the CostaRican larvaeastriviltalusCoquillettwas dueto

some

confusioninthelistreturned tous;

most

ofthe adultsare,

we

find,placedunderconjirmaiusinthecol- lection.

The name

"covfinnatus"hasbeen used fora

number

ofdifferent mosquitoes

which

are similar inhaving alarge silverypatchonthe ante- riorpart of the thorax.

We have

given

new names

totheformsidentified as ''confirmotus" from theUnitedStates {Aedesinfirmains

Dyar & Knab,

Journ. N. Y. Ent. Soc, xiv, 197, 1906)

and

Jamaica [Aedes hemisurns

Dyar & Knab,

and we now

identify

Arribitlzaga,described from the Argentine,inwhich case Mr. Theobald's identification should be restored. But

we have

no

proof ofthis.

euplocamus ranges fromCostaRicatoTrinidad,as

we now

itwilldoubtlessbe foundtoextendintothetropicsofBrazil; butwhether theArgentine form isthe

ornot canonlybetold from

Urich has sent us aspecimen bred from a small pool inthe forest,Trinidad,which

we

think istheCvf/ea-6-e9TohtsofTheobald,described from Brazil

and

Trinidad. Thisspecieshasbeenidentified asoccurringin theUnitedStates,but

we have

found theretobe twospecies, differing in thelarvae.

We

have

renamed

these, callingthe Atlantic Coastone Aedes atkmtlcus,theGulf CoastoneAedesiorinenlor(Dyar<kKnab,Journ.N.Y.

Ent.Soc,xiv, 191, 198, 1906).

We assumed

that neither

was

conspecific with the Tropical

American

form,

and

this assum])tion is proven to be

correct

by

tlie larva before us. It falls in the table with meridionalis, having 12scales inthe

comb

fbut differs in that the pecten of thetube does not reach half the length.

The

difference is not verymarked,

and

the larvae are otherwise

much

alike, sothatitseemsnot unlikely thatour meridionalis willfallasa

synonym

ofserralusTheobald.

Working

withthe larvae alone

and

handicapped

by

the identification of "Janthi^iosoma musicaSay"

which we had

receivedforthe adults (See Journ. N.Y. Ent.

Soc,xiv, 195),the larva of the trueserralus being

unknown, we had no way

of

knowing

that

we had

a larva before us the

same

asornearserraius Theob.

A

shows

the

median

silvery thoracic

ofserraius, but the specimen is not perfect

and we

await furthermaterial beforepronouncingpositively

only included under Aedes from the similarity of their modification. Auratus differs from

them

inhaving onlythesinglepair of hairtuftsonthetube. These

tuftsareonlyjustwithin the pecten, opposite the lasttooth. Exceptfor the difference in the lateral comb,the larva is very

much

like that of Aedes pertinax

easilybea sexual differenceifnot simplyvarietal.

We

are

much

indebtedtoDr. Lutzforcopies of thepub- licationsabovereferred to,butareunabletoquote thelatteroneaccurately, asthe separate sent us contains neither paginationnordate.

The

"Imprensa

Medica"

isnot availablein Washington. Capricorniiwasdescribedfrom the "zoneofthe Tropic of Capricorn,"

which we

infer tobethevicinity ofRio deJaneiro,Brazil.

We

refused toacceptthis

name

as

we

couldnotfind the description. It exists, nevertheless (Entomologist, xxxvi,282, 1903);

but the circumstance proves fortunate, for the specimens were wrongly

named.

A.jiliiloaopliicus has toothed claws inthe femaleadult

and

ob- viously belongs to Dr. Lutz's genus S(egoco7Wj)s,

which we

are unableto recognizeas distinctfrom Aedes.

The

specieshasfaint silverywhitebands

on

all the abdominal segments above

and

thus superficially resembles

Haemagogus

equinns Theobald, described from Jamaica; but that has simple clawsin the female,asTheobaldexpresslystates.

described from Trindad) isthefemaleof the speciesofwhich Verrallina loternaria Coquillettisthe male, the sexes being dimorphic.

The

species will be

known

aswsolita Coquillett. In podograpJdcas the sexes are

monomorphic.

The

larvae were separated

by

usontheshapeoftheantennae; but as this character is rather indefinite, it will be better to changethetable, omitting the dichotomy 40, placing podographicusMith insoliiaunder44,

and

separate

them by

The

genus

Haemagogus

willhavetoberecognizedonadult charactersifat all;the larvaedonot sharplydifferentiatethemselvesfromAedes.

We

take this to be a groupspecialized offfromAedes, thetarsal claws of thefemale havinglostthetooth.

The

smallendjointofthe palpusisretained,

which

differentiates the genus from Cidex.

We add

to the genus,asused

by

Theobald,

Houardina and Gymnomelopa

(all but the typespecies),

which

difler in ornamentation, butagreeinotherrespects. Cacomyia

was

pro- posed

by

Coquillett foralhomacidata Theobald

and

equinns Theobald,

on

the venational characters used

by

Theobaldtoseparate thespecies.

We

agreewith the English authorthat these arenot of genericvalue.

The

other characters adduced

by

Coquillett from specimens before

him

are faliaceous, for he

had

before

him

neither albomaculaius nor equinus, the specimens he

had

so identified being,as to the former, Aedescapricornii Lutz

and

Aedesajfirmatits

Dyar & Knab

; as tothelatter,Aedes pMlosophicus

Dyar & Knab,

allwith toothed claws, incontradiction ofTheobald'sex- plicitstatementtothe contrary.

We

presumethatthe threespeciesplaced

by

Dr.Lutzin hisgenus Gualieriabelong here,though

we have

notseen authentic specimens. G.fidvithoraxisstated tohavesimpleclaws,but of

Mr. Urich hasdiscovered the larva of this elegant species

and

sentus several larval skins from Trinidad.

The

species,

by

the thoracic orna- mentationoftheadult, is like Aedes knabi Coquillett {Culex knabi Coquil-

lett,Proc.Ent.Soc.Wash.,vii,133, 1906).

That

Mr.Coquillettshouldde- scribethespecies in TaeniorhynchuswhileDr.LutzplacesitinHaemagogus,

shows

thefutilityofthescalecharactersas a

means

of generic separation.

The

larvafallsinourtableofAedesunderthedichotomy43,

and would

go

into44 (with knabi,insolita,

and

podographicas) but that thesecondaryab- dominalhairsarecoarse

and

stellate. Ithas theairtubeshort,

2x1,

strongly tapered

on

outerhalf,the pecten of13denselyplaced teeth,the outerones long, blunt,followed

by

along,4-hairedtuft.

The

larvae were taken from a hollow tree,

and

were forwarded to Mr. Urich

by

Dr. J. R. Dickson.

We

congratulateMr. Urich

and

Dr. Dickson

on

this interesting discovery.
