" picked up from the surface of the ground, having been exposed to the weather.Itissaid that this race never buried their dead, butcarried
them
outand
depositedthem
in heaps, where they wereleft todecay, sothat the bonesareeasilyfoundinmany
different parts of the island.They
were cannibals; the remnants of the racenow
found inthe island having beenknown
to prac- tice cannibalism as late as about ten years ago.They now number
onlyabouttwenty-five souls, arelimited to areserva- tion,and
sustainedby
the colonial government.The name
Maori-ori issaid to
mean
' before the Maoris,'and
indicates that these people,the aborigines ofChatham

collection of plants from theAuckland
Islandswas
taken from the neighborhoodof theGerman
transit-station at that place,thesame
locality occupied by SirJames

in 1841,in the Erebusand
Terror.The

Haven, for identification, by Dr. Kidder, is a fine specimen of a pedunculatedascidian, belongingto the genus Boltenia. Thissame
genus is represented on theNew

land coast by the species Bolteni, the stemsof which are thefavorite abiding places of luauy hydroids; and it is interesting to note that the three genera, ^ertularia^ Sertularella, andLafoea., which are almost in-
variably represented on our
New England
species, are alsorepresented on thestem of thissouthern specimen."
The
species of Sertulariaisverycloseto, ifnotidentical with, /!?.oper- culataofLinnaeus; but there beingnogonothecae presentoneitherofthe three species, I shall uotattempt tomake
specificdeterminations."
The
genusSertularellaisrepresentedbyaspeciesresemblinginmode
of growth the 8. tricuspidataof Alder. Hydrothecse alternate, stout,
and with atricuspid rim. Possibly tliis isidentical with the Sertularia johnstoniof Murray. (Dieffeubach's
Kew
Zealand,London, 1843.)"
The
third species is probablyamember
of thegenus Lafoea; itisa creeping form,and many
of the hydrothecse have only their upper i)or- tionsfree, the lower portious recliningupon
the stolon.The
ascidian bearing these hydroidswas
collected at Port Chalmers,New
Zealand, in January, 1875, by Dr. E. Kershner, U. S. N."II-

considerablecollectionwas
alsomade
by Mr.Israel Russell,one of the photographersto theNew
Zealand party, mostly from theprovince of Otago,New
Zealand. Mr. Eussell's collection includesanumber
of Maori implements, withsome
supposed to belong to astill older race (perhaps the Maori-ori). His bird-skins represent specimensofLams
dominicaniis$, Daption capensis, Casarca variegata, Gm., Podicepscris- tatus{australls,Gould) S,Forphyriopscrassirostris,Graj, Greadioncarun- culatus,
and
two pigeonsand
a parrot, as yet undetermined. Besides these,thereareanumber
ofNew
Zealandbirdspreserved in alcohol,and alarge collection ofthe bones ofthe moa.Other departments of natural history are well represented in Mr.
Russell'scollectiou. Therearealarge
number
offossil shellsfromLake
Wakatipu,New
Zealand,and
of recent forms from thesame
pit inwhich the Maori implements were found. Also, a considerablecollec- tionof plants,

Island party, sends three skulls, two of Maoris
and
oneof aMaori-ori, forthe authenticity ofwhich he vouches.
