Chapter IV. Conclusion
Human behavior is one of the important factors in the development of the natural environment. Because what we do in our daily life, our habits, and our actions can affect the natural condition. It may not take an instant effect but along with the time it does will show the impact. Human life is related to the environment around them. If the environment’s damaged, human life will also be disrupted. That’s why it’s our duty to take care of our environment, especially our natural environment. This research take farmer and their plantation as an example of human habits affect the environment around them. Located in Kopeng Village where there are lots of plantations and farmers, the data for this proposal have been collected. Using Buell’s first-wave ecocriticism that has the main focus is to investigate that humans may have the ability to affect the environment, this research was conducted.
To relate the theory with the research, This thesis shows a connection between farmers, as a representative of the concept of human habit that is carried out in this thesis, and their plantation. How’s farmer habits influence the growth of the plants? The data for this research was collected through field study and interviews with the farmer in Kopeng Village. And then the gathered data were used to make a short story that will be the result of this thesis with “Re- do” as the title. Why do “Re-do” chosen to be the title? It is related to the story where Rinjani, the main character of the story, ask Pak Danu, one of the farmers in the village if she can help him to plant tomato on his plantation to fill in data for her thesis. And then they are working together for months to grow the tomatoes. The problem that occurs in the story is that Rinjani feels that Pak Danu is giving too much fertilizer because he follows the usual dosage that he gives to other plants on his plantation. Rinjani felt that the tomato plants shouldn't have been given that much fertilizer especially since it is the rainy season, but Pak Danu still did what he usually did before planting crops on his farm. The result is the tomatoes die due to pests and decay before they have an opportunity to harvest them. Disappointed with the condition of his land, Pak Danu didn't give up and was going to try to plant the land again with tomatoes. there Rinjani was willing to return to help Pak Danu take care of his plantation. The last part where they replant the plantation is how “Re-do” was chosen to be the title.
The short story has shown how farmers' habits can influence the natural environment around them, in this case, the plantation. What Pak Danu did is connect with Buell’s first-wave ecocriticism theory where humans can affect the environment negatively. But not just negative impact, the story also shows that human can affect the environment positively. An example is

when Rinjani helps his grandfather at the beginning of the story. She measures the distance between the application of fertilizer and the planting hole so that the fertilizer does not injure the planted seeds. Another example is when Pak Danu's workers pile up the grass in the holes made on the farm so that it becomes fertilizer so it doesn't rot in landfills.
Based on the research question of how farmers’ habits in Kopeng Village affect the growth of crops, data gathering has been done to find the habits that most of the farmers in Kopeng Village have in order to know their method of taking care of the plant. From the data there are some habits that manage to be chosen and included in the short story, for example, measuring the distance of plants and fertilizers, burying weeds in the holes between the bedengan, and their habits in choosing and applying fertilizers also affect the growth of the crop, the way they care for and observe crop will also determine what kind of results will be obtained during the harvest season. Pak Danu is an experienced farmer who knows about his plantation and how to take care of his crops, but unfortunately, his routine in caring for crops on his plantation did not really suit the tomato plants he had just tried to plant on one of his farms. As a result, the tomato plants cannot be harvested in good condition and some of them even died because of stems rotting and pest attacks.
The purpose of this thesis is to show that humans play an essential role in the environment around them. Because the one who can take care of and protect the environment is human themselves. This thesis also aims to add examples for Buell's first-wave theory of ecocriticism which focuses on the possibility of humans influencing environmental conditions.
Some humans understand that protecting the environment around them is important, but there are not many humans who are still indifferent and unknowingly produce bad habits towards the environment. With this purpose, these findings can add another example of the relationship between humans and nature where our behavior can affect the development of the surrounding environment.
