To Jennifer, my beautiful and sweet wife, whose constant encouragement and support allowed me to keep it to the end. To our children, Julianna, Jake and Jaleigh, who cheered me on and pushed me to keep going even when I didn't think I could. I will never be able to thank each of you adequately for helping make this dream a reality.

MBE-A Management by Exception: Active Management MBE-P by Exception: Passive Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire MLQ Southern Baptist Convention of the SBC. The idea for this research was born out of a call to minister to youth as well as a desire to help other youth ministers. There will never be enough words or ways to express my appreciation for my family.

They always knew I would finish it, even though I often thought it wouldn't. I called my father many times and he gave me kind words that helped me see things differently and encouraged me to continue in this endeavor.

RESEARCH CONCERN

About thirty years ago, Paul Borthwick stated, “The general consensus is that the average term of office of youth pastors does not exceed eighteen months.”9. Finally, Wheelington says, “The minister's relationship with God through Jesus must be of the highest. 18Russell Neal Wheelington, “The Longevity of Youth Pastors in Relation to Personal Characteristics and Leadership Techniques” (Ph.D.

McKenzie's definition more succinctly summarizes youth ministry as "the intentional ministry of the church designed for persons of middle and high school age."35. The handmaid, though widespread, was not a popular idea in the culture when the New Testament was being written: “The Greeks. Furthermore, because of the focus of this study, this researcher adopts McKenzie's definition of youth ministry: "Intentional church ministry designed for middle and high school aged persons."169.

Findings

Research question 1: What is the tenure of youth ministers affiliated with Metro Youth Minister's Association. The tenure of youth pastors affiliated with Metro Youth Minister's Association was measured by the number of years they served full-time in youth ministry. The descriptive summary of the statistics showed that the average tenure of the 46 youth ministers affiliated with Metro Youth Minister's Association was 10 years and 3 months with a standard deviation of 7 years.

The longest tenure of any youth minister was 35 years and the shortest was 1 year (see Table 11). Research Question 2: What relationship, if any, exists between selected demographics and ministerial experience of youth ministers affiliated with the Metro Youth Minister’s Association. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to examine the relationship between tenure of youth ministers affiliated with the Metro Youth Minister’s Association with the categorically measured demographic variables of gender, marital status, educational attainment, and mentoring history.

Youth ministers who earned an undergraduate degree in a field unrelated to ministry (M = 5) and a high school diploma or GED (M = 6) have the lowest average number of years of service as a full-time youth minister (see Table 18). . Research Question 3: What is the dominant self-perceived leadership style(s), according to the MLQ (Form 5X), of youth ministers affiliated with the Metro Youth Minister’s Association. The majority (93.5 percent) of youth ministers associated with the Metro Youth Minister's Association perceived the transformational leadership style themselves.

Research Question 5: What relationship, if any, exists between self-perceived leadership style(s), according to the MLQ (Schedule 5X), and tenure of youth ministers affiliated with the Metro Youth Ministers Association. Despite the low number of self-perceived transactional leaders in the sample of youth ministers, ANOVA was calculated to examine the relationship between tenure of youth ministers affiliated with the Metro Youth Minister's Association with their leadership style(s). The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between leadership styles and tenure of youth ministers affiliated with the Metro Youth Ministers Association.

This review examined the interrelationship between youth pastor leadership styles and youth pastor tenure. In addition, the relationship between certain demographics of youth ministers and their term of office was taken into account at this stage. Are you dating your wife?” and “Do you spend time with your children?” He further stated, “These questions have changed over the years, but they have always been things that have been in line with the Bible.” Participant 10 said , that "true reliance on God and God's faithfulness" helped him. I mean, it was true, it was difficult." Participant 17 said that unrealistic pressure on youth pastors was one of the obstacles his superior placed on him.The fourth area, the test of faith or spiritual struggles, was discussed in the interviews by 5 participants.

All of these participants said that family is most important to them. You either lead well or you lead badly, but you have to lead." Participant 12 continued the theme by explaining the connection between. He also shared some keys about building relationships with volunteers: "As a leader, your people need to know that you love them and that you care about them if you're going to run with them and serve and live together." Participant 17 shared the same sentiment about the importance of relationships with volunteers: "I think people see my heart and they're more important to me than what they create." Each of of these participants emphasized that work is not only for people, but also with people.

I think I am sentenced to life imprisonment in the service". Participant 11 echoed the same sentiment when he said he did not feel a lifelong calling to youth ministry, however "I feel called to serve throughout my life." However, he realizes that this is a season of his life: "I will be a lead pastor one day." Participant 14 shared a similar view that he “wasn't sure he was sentenced to life imprisonment in relation to youth ministry. The third factor, participation in leadership decisions, was identified in the interviews of 5 of the participants.

The first element, remaining faithful and loving to God, was discussed in the interviews of 9 of the participants. He encouraged youth ministers to "be faithful where God calls you". Participant 6 conveyed a very "simplistic" message to other youth ministers. He reminded other youth ministers to "make it about people and not about programs." Participant 17 encouraged youth ministers to remember those they work with when it comes.

The sixth element, learning to share the leadership role, was evidenced in the interviews of 2 of the participants.
