The leaders of the First Baptist Church of Troy desire to equip the saints for the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:15). These principles are more fully reflected in the Confessional Statement of Biblical Counseling. Election is predetermined in the Father's love (1:4) that men may be redeemed through his blood (1:7).

These gifted men are given the Church “for the perfecting of the saints.” The word. Biblical counseling in the light of the sufficiency of Scripture is the most neglected doctrine in the history of.

The Importance and Need for Biblical Counseling

For most, church is simply an event to attend or an organization to belong to. The passive body that pays for the professional culture of the modern evangelical church must be abandoned for the model of ministry that God has so wisely ordained. I shared the different methods of ACBC counseling, giving examples to help each participant see and hear the complexities in Christian counseling.

At the end of Seminar 1, I shared the historical significance of counseling's origins in the 1900s. Skinner and others, who sought answers within themselves to bring help to those struggling in life. Because these secular psychologists were atheists, their belief system stemmed from the fact that men are good and that man has answers within himself for solutions to all of life's problems.

Biblical Counseling and The Role of Scripture

Before the early 20th century, biblical pastoral ministry was a norm, but this changed with the rise of secular psychology led by Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, B. For Christians, if the premise of understanding man is wrong , then the solution to the problem of man becomes wrong. Moreover, it was a departure from everything the Enlightenment had stood for: a rationalistic world, a naturalistic view of life, meaning that is universal, and moral norms that are embedded in the nature of things and can be discovered with just a little effort. difficulty, as well as structure, order and coherence.3.

The integrationist trades the truth of God's Word for something that often conflicts with Scripture. The sufficiency of scripture in the context of pastoral care and counseling is perhaps the most controversial topic in modern evangelicalism. Most believe that theology is to pastors what psychology is to counselors, but the sad reality is that the majority of people.

Many believe that the Bible is necessary for salvation and learning, but not for the everyday problems of life. The sufficiency of scripture is important, not only as it speaks of authority and trust, but to give hope to the wounded in a counseling room.

Biblical Counseling and the Goal of Progressive Sanctification

The end goal of biblical counseling is not simply to counsel broken sinners with a boost of confidence apart from greater trust in the Holy Spirit. The ultimate goal of biblical counseling is only Christ-likeness and not a state of normalcy as Paul describes, "Not conformed to this world, but be. The further a man departs from the image of God (Christ), the easier it is for the sin of setting in and causing normality and unrest in the soul.

Augustine of Hippo explains, "You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You."6 Because this earth is not our home, solace for the soul can never be attained through earthly possessions as the world promises. The hope in Christ frees believers from the bondage of present reality and purifies thoughts more in the kingdom to come. 1 John 3:3 says, "And whoever thus hopes in him purifies himself just as he is clean." As disciples of Christ, waiting in the present reality in Christ leads to weaning from the world and drives people to their knees by becoming more sanctified in the likeness of Christ.

The Crucial Importance of Understanding the Heart within

The love of the heart affects both the cognition of the mind and the will to behave. 8 If biblical counselors can make people think differently with the help of the Spirit, then believers will begin to see the transformation within the heart and see through the revealed God's word another way of decision-making. Scripture shows that people have two choices in the heat of the situation: (1) oriented toward feelings (selfish) or (2) oriented toward commandments (God). Second Corinthians explains: "So whether we are at home or away, we make it our goal to please him." There are only two choices from the heart: to please God or to please yourself.

The heart eventually leads to the point of deciding to choose the difficult path that leads to God/pleasure—"If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me" (Luke 9:23 ). —or the easy way that leads to self/destruction—"There is a way that seems right to a man, but the end of it is the way of death" (Prov 14:12). Even though Scriptural instructions are difficult to follow, the path becomes easier with the help of the Holy Spirit (Prov 4:8; Matt 11:30). The heart dynamic is often overcomplicated by society, yet Jesus makes the problem of the heart quite simple.

For biblical counselors, the goal is to lead the client to the Scriptures so that he/she can richly abide in the Word of Christ and that the heart may be filled with thanksgiving instead of worldly sorrow (Col. 1:16).

Three Areas Dealing with the Sinful Nature

Before the genealogical record, Luke confirms Jesus as the Beloved Son of God (Luke 3:21) by baptism by John the Baptist (Luke 3:1-22). Although Adam was called the Son of God (Luke 3:38), he had failed even though he was in the most idealistic spot in the garden (Gen. 2:8-15). Jesus Christ, on the other hand, was in the wilderness full of temptations and wild beasts (Mark 1:12-13), He had not eaten for 40 days and was hungry (Luke 4:2), and He was alone and tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:11). 1).

However, Jesus reversed what Adam could not achieve and made the way to eternal life (John 17:3). In one act of righteousness, Jesus undid what Adam could not do in his flesh. Christ is rarely mentioned or emphasized as the only solution to life's problem in integration counseling.

At the end of Seminar 5, I offered a spiritual diagnostic chart that deals with habitual sin in the counselee's lifestyle. These questions can reveal the counselee's belief system and expectations, which can be addressed later in the counseling session.

The Role, Relationship, and Responsibility of

I want to be your brother so that you can become more like Christ.” A confident biblical counselor will stimulate the conscience (Ephesians 4). This truth, vouched for by God and shown as part of His armor, is the girdle that believers must gird around their waists as they resist the attacks of the evil one (Eph 6:14). This physical growth has Christ as its goal: he is the one into whom believers should grow.

In the twenty-first century, evangelical Christians live in a context where individualism is exalted and personal autonomy of privatized faith is an automatic expectation and further a personal right. To conclude Seminar 6 with a practical component of the counseling session, each person participated in a church discipline scenario. Even within the paid ministerial staffs, eight out of ten agreed that church discipline only brings more division rather than unity and growth.

One of the ministers in the room even said that Christians should not bring that matter to the person because it would upset him even more. Biblical counselors, however, must embrace and understand that biblical church discipline begins first by loving the individual and standing beside the individual in prayer and support as a process of discipleship growth.11 Wayne Mack writes, “While it may seem utterly loveless to To expel someone from the fellowship of the church, Jesus commands us to do this when someone refuses to repent of his or her sin.

Key Principles in Communication for Biblical

As the session progresses, it is important to move progressively from the person's circumstances/situation to the heart of the matter. It is important for a counselor to listen reflectively and validate understanding of the situation as the counselor interacts with the counselee's problem. As mentioned, a person's purpose for coming to counseling may not be God's ultimate purpose for counseling.

Instead of the four lies, Paul gives four promises from God: "No temptation has overtaken you that is not human. In the initial phase of the counseling sessions, it is important not only to set the right goals, but to clarify expectations and requirements. The counselor's four expectations are (1) an attitude of a learner's spirit - the permission and agreement to "speak the truth in love" (Eph 4:15) while the counselor speaks God's Word for comfort or the person's sin confront when he is out of line. with biblical truth.

The principles of God's grace working in and through the counselee's life may be a foreign concept. The goal of the action plan is to instill and strengthen in the counselee a solid understanding of Christ's identity and action in a person's life.
