The

large collection of

Malayan mammals

in the

United

States

National Museum

includes representatives of the follow- ing six forms,

none

of

which appears

to

have been

previously described.

Pipistrellus curtatus sp. nov.

Type.—

Adultfemale(inalcohol) No. 141,019, U.S.National

Diagnosis.

Resemblingthe

Javan

Pipistrellusimbricatus,butearlarger, muzzleshorter

and crown

areaofanteriorlowerpremolar

much

reduced.

Externalcharacters.—Size

and

generalform essentially as inP. imbri- catus, but tailslightlylonger

and

foot lessrobust.

Membranes

withno special peculiarities,the

wing

inserted at baseofoutertoe. Calcar ter- minatingindistinctly,itsposteriorborder withaslight keel thatshows

no

tendency to developintoadistinctlobelike thatofP. imbricatus.

Ear

extending a littlebeyond nostril

when

laid forward, itsgeneral outline as in P. imbricatus but antitragus better developed.

Head

shorter

and

broader than in the

Javan

species, its general outline

when

viewed from abovenearlycircular, withslightlyprojecting, moderately tumidmuzzle.

Color after sixyears immersion inalcohol apparently not sodark as in P. imbricatus.

Skull

and

teeth.

The

skull isatoncedistinguishablefromthatofPipis- trellus imbricatus bythedecided reduction of rostrum as

compared

with braincase, a difference equally appreciable in dorsal or palatal view.

Palateso

much

shortened that length in

median

line isonlyaboutequal towidth betweenlastmolars. Auditalbullae as inP. imbricatus. Basi- sphenoidpitsratherwell defined.

Teethas in Pipistrellusimbricatus except thatpremolars are decidedly

more

reduced; anteriorupper premolar with crownarea barely equal to halfthatofouterincisor;

Diagnosis.

— A member

ofthe

Epimys

rattus group; color as inthedark E. shnalurensis of Simalur Island, Sumatra, but size decidedly less,the hindfoot not attaining a length of 40

mm.,

the

maximum

among

twelveadults, 42

mm.

Nineteen, allfrom NiasIsland.

Remarks.

— The

Nias representativeof the

Epimys

rattus group shares the dark color of theotherBarussan local forms.

The

upperpartshave

more

ofthe burlycastthan isusual inE. simalurensis and thebellyisa clearer

smoky

gray, but thedifferenceis veryslight. In sizethere is a

marked

contrast witli E. simalurensis

and

E. lugens, in bothof which the lengthofthehindfootusually exceeds 40 nun., andthe condylobasal length is usually

more

than 45

mm.

In both sizeand color thescries is

remarkablyuniform.

Two

Niasspecimens, however,representa light col- oredspecies essentially like

Epimys

neglectus (Nos.121,8(12 and 141,184);

this animal hasprobably been artificiallyintroduced.

Diagnosis.

— A member

of the

Epimys

cremoriventer group resembling the previously

known

species in general appearance, but size decidedly greater, and skull with anterior portion ofrostrum widened.

Color.

The

color does not differ essentiallyfrom that of

Epimys

cre-

moriventer, though theoehraceousofthe hack isduller (lessyellow)and the interminglingofblackish hairs is

somewhat more

conspicuous. Tail morenoticeably blackish thanin E. cremoriventer,itsannulations coarser and

more

evident.

Skull

and

teeth.

Aside from itsconspicuously greatersize the skull of

Epimys

barussanus differs from that of E. cremoriventer in a distinct broadening and deepeningof anterior portion ofrostrum atonce appre- ciable on comparison of specimens. Contrast between width of nasals anteriorlyandposteriorly

more

evidentthaninthe smaller animal. Teeth withnopeculiarities ofform.

Diagnosis.

Like

Epimys

cremoriventerbut with relatively longer tail, smallerteeth and

more

slenderskull; nasalsshowingatendencytowiden anteriorly as inE. barussanus.

Diagnosis.

— A member

of the

Epimys

aspergroup, with the large size and heavy teeth ofE. batamanus Lyon,

and

E.

mandus

Lyon, but color verydark

and

rich, the upperpartsessentially as inE.

mandus

but

more

strongly oehraceous, the underpartsclearyellowish ochraceous-buffwith only a slight trace ofgray in regionofchin.
