General university scholarships and financial aid are available to Allied Health Sciences students; in addition, there are specific scholarships and loans available only to Allied Health Sciences students. Allied Health students in need of financial assistance can contact the office of the Division of Complementary Health Sciences for information. Application for the Work-Study Program is made through the general financial aid application mentioned above. Information on financial assistance available to veterans under government benefits of public law may be obtained from the Veterans Administration Regional Office, 36 South Pennsylvania Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204.

Division of Allied Health Sciences

Candidates for programs in the Division of Allied Health Sciences must have an interest in working with people and solving health problems. All completed applications must be submitted by the applicant to the Office of the Division of Allied Health Sciences, 1100 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. The Division of Allied Health Sciences supports the University's policy of nondiscrimination in student admissions.

The student who has been dismissed will submit his request in writing to the Division of Allied Health Sciences. A dismissed student who does not request readmission to the Department of Allied Health Sciences within fifteen days may reapply for the following year. If no agreement has been reached on continuation, the student must apply again to the Department of Allied Health Sciences.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

A student in the Department of Allied Health Sciences is dismissed if, in the judgment of the Allied Health Academic Appeals Committee and with the consent of the Allied Health Council, he ceases to meet the academic and professional standards of his field of study. The Allied Health Academic Appeals Committee, in cooperation with the Allied Health Council, will review petitions for readmission of students who have been dismissed. Calculation of the honors grade will be based on the total number of hours completed at Indiana University.

Unique cases and appeals will be heard by the Honors Committee of the Division of Allied Health Sciences. The curricular patterns of the Allied Health Sciences department vary depending on the professional fields. In addition to the Allied Health Core Curriculum, certain courses are required to meet the prerequisites (see the specific subject area in the program section). The Allied Health Sciences department allows a broad approach to electives.

Programs in the Division of Allied Health Sciences

DENT AL HYGIENE PROGRAMS

Fundamental to the foundation of the curriculum is the belief that the health teacher must be both a professional teacher and a competent, experienced technician. Graduates of the program are expected to assume responsibility for planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating healthcare education programs within their technical areas. Ability to participate in the formulation and implementation of the educational purpose and philosophy.

At the conclusion of the second semester, the student completes a one-month membership, which may be assigned outside of Indianapolis. Please refer to the School of Business Bulletin for course descriptions of business courses. These specialized programs may be considered for prerequisite completion only if they have been approved by the Director of the Medical Records Administration Program.

Students will not be admitted to the professional year of the Medical Technology program without this verification. The Medical Transcription Technology program prepares the student to function as a responsible member of the healthcare team. Upon satisfactory completion of the required courses, including the Allied Health Core Curriculum, the student is eligible for an Associate of Science degree.

Rules and Regulations of the Indiana State Board of Health and the Indiana State Health Facilities Licensing Board. Occupational therapy is concerned with assisting an individual in the management of occupational behavior appropriate to each developmental task and in the orderly progression from one developmental task to the next throughout the life cycle. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the certification exam leading to admission to the American Occupational Therapy Association's Registry of Occupational Therapists.

The occupational therapist assistant is a technically qualified member of the healthcare team who works either independently, in collaboration or with the supervision of a registered occupational therapist.

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Public Health Academic Programs offers four academic programs in the Division of Allied Health Sciences leading to baccalaureate degrees in the professional areas of environmental health sciences, health administration, public health dental hygiene, and public health education. In addition to the Allied Health Core Curriculum, students must complete the foundational courses below to be eligible for admission to the Environmental Health Program. Introduction to Scientific Reasoning (3 ers.) Physical Systems of the Environment (3 ers.) Earth Sciences: Materials and Processes (3 ers.).

After completing the preprofessional courses (approximately 60-65 hours), the student will continue his studies in the School of Medicine, Indianapolis, if accepted into the program. NOTE: Excursions are compulsory parts of the professional curriculum and students are advised that they must bear the costs associated with these activities.

The second and third years take place at the School of Dentistry in Indianapolis or at one of the regional campuses. The fourth or senior year is through the Department of Allied Health Sciences at Indianapolis. Ten semester credit hours are required during the latter part of the second semester of the senior year, consisting of supervised practical on-the-job experience with state and local public health departments.

In addition to the Allied Health Core Curriculum, students must complete the prerequisite courses listed below to be eligible for admission to the Public Health Education Program. Because several prerequisite courses are not currently offered at some campuses, students should seek specialized program planning and waivers from the Director of the Public Health Education Program (Bal Residence, Room J SOA, 1100 West Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202). These specialized programs may only be considered for fulfillment of prerequisites if approved by the Director of the Public Health Education Program.

After completing the pre-professional courses (90 hours), the student will continue his studies at the School of Medicine, Indianapolis, if accepted into the program.

MASTER'S PROGRAM IN ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES EDUCATION

An applicant who has not completed a baccalaureate or certificate program in a paramedical field or its equivalent, or graduates of foreign programs, may be admitted conditionally. An applicant for the Master of Science in Education majoring in Allied Health Sciences Education must hold a baccalaureate degree and an appropriate professional certificate or license in one of the allied health fields. Sufficient additional graduate coursework to allow intensive study in an area related to allied health care.

The study of professions, services and trends that influence future developments in the field of health. Individual and group study dealing with current problems or procedures for improving teaching and practice in allied health fields. The study of professions, services and trends that influence future developments in the field of health.

Personal and societal health needs and trends influencing education, practice and future developments in allied health fields. Techniques of office management, management of funds, accounting, records and reports and procurement applied to allied health services. Relating educational theory to practice through supported teaching experience in an allied health setting.
