Student advocates

It’s great to see energy and initiative — and we saw it Sunday.

Student representa ti ves from public and private Indiana colleges. including IUPUI, met here to charter thè Indiana Student Higher Education Association.

Their intent is to gather information for member schools about issues relating to higher education.

They pian to stay abreast of pending legista tion and encourage students to make their views known to state and national representatives.

They've only begun and thè first hurdles are big.

Several schools have shown interest but ISHEA needs to recruit more.

They re leery of outright lobbying, not wanting to be identified with past student lobby groups which addressed controversial issues like thè Vietnam War and legalizing abortion and marijuana.

Private colleges understandably see many of their needs as different from public universities and don’t want to join forces in lobbying.

Despi te thè problems they face, they re starting to gel into what may be thè most effective advocate this state's higher ed students have. If thè members of ISHEA can pulì off their information dissemination and keep that effort going year after year, they’ll have done yeoman’s Service.

To thè editor.

The weekend of October 29 and 30 will go down in thè history books ai a proud one for IUPUI.

It wasn't an intemational track meet with thè Soviets nor waa it thè National Sporta Festival, though it waa that well run — it waa thè Indianapoiia Soccer Weekend.

IUPUI ahouid be ex tremai y proud of ita Student Asaembly and ita soccer team. Both.

groups acquitted themselvea extremely well.

The soccer team and ita backera brought thè event to IUPUI. The Student Asaembly mede it work. And boy did it work.

We had 7,000 to 8,000 people in from Ohio, Kentucky.

Illinois and from throughout

thè state of Indiana and not one comment could be heard that waa not full of praiae for quality of thè event and how it waa run.

I am extremely proud of thè way our soccer team performed and thè job that thè Student Asaembly did during thè weekend'a eventa. They were all fabulous.

Lei us all hope that this new found spirit of pride that waa demonatrateò this laat weekend continuea to grow in support and atrength as we prepare for thè fall of 83 and thè soccer aeaaon ahead

Thank you, it waa truly neat to aee a job so well done.

Sincerely,

Charle E Wilkinaon Head Coach IUPUI Soccer

The aituation left our heroine befùddled: The university enjoyed thè use of her money for six weeks, refused ita own check at first and then charged her two bits to refund money 4rhich was hers to begin with.

Evolution or Extinction The Choice Before Us

A System s Approach to thè Study of thè Future Richard R. Curtis

Professor of Speech Com m untcatlon

lt is now a fact that we exercise an cnormous measure of control over thè world in : which future generations will live This control is far reaching and unprecedented

and reflects our emerging power as energy processing systems With our evolu- tionary control comes an unprecedented need for a System of values that will command sufficient consensus to direct this new control

in this hook thè author suggests that a complex of systems can now begin to develop with some promise to gainlng universal acceptance The future is in our hands and there can be no more important task than to devise a System of values to guide us

Moon shines on University Theatre

by Della Pacbeco

Something eerie’s happening ' in thè Cable Building. Witches and conjur people are stealthily creeping over mountains and a witchboy is ridigg his eagle in thè m oonlight. Mountains?

Witches? What are conjur peo

ple? They ’re in thè Cable Building?

This and much more is hap

pening as a part of ‘Dark of thè Moon," thè IUPUI Univer

"Dark of thè Moon" is based on thè "Ballad of Barbara Alien" and recounts thè story of an elfin witchboy who falla in love with thè beautiful Barbara Alien. The action of thè play is set in thè Smoky Mountains. Live bluegrass music will be performed by thè Preservation Band, one of Indianapolis most sought after bluegrass banda

Qn thè surface "Dark of thè Moon" appears to be just thè story of mountain people and their encounter with a

.. witchboy However if one looks closer. it is really a story of superstition and prejudice and thè tragedy that can occur when these get out of hand Just as superstition is an integrai part of thè action of

"Dark of thè Moon. superati tion also reared its head during thè Broadway run of thè play As stated in program notes on thè play. "During thè run on Broadway one of thè actors died in thè wings during a per formance and another had a heart atlack in thè revival scene and had to be carried off stage by other actors as part of thè action. In faci thè death rate among thè cast was so high, thè actors began to beheve thè play was cursed. A petition was circulated among them demanding that thè actual Bibie used in thè church be replaced Their wish was granted, but thè night that Preacher Haggler’s Bible was replaced by Gray's Anatomy, thè closing notice was posted backstage

Superstition aeide. "Dark of thè Moon" affirms life’s value in thè face of ad versi ty and shows us a lesa complicated Life

— where thè simple things mean a lot.

"Dark of thè Moon" features a cast of 31 in addition to thè Preservation Band. Playing thè lead characters are Mark A.
