The purpose of the research was to know whether or not there is a significant effect of using cloze procedure towards students’ reading skill in recount text. This research used pre-experimental design, which also called one group of pre-test post- test design. The selected population of the research was the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 15 Tanjungpinang. The researcher selected class VIIIC from all eighth-grade students as the sample of the research. The sampling technique applied by the researcher is cluster random sampling. The instrument of this research was reading test. The data was analyzed by using SPSS Statistics 21 software.
The result of this research displayed that the mean score of pretests was 58.46 and the mean score of posttests was 80.77, which indicated that the mean score of posttests was better than pretest. As the tcount 7.994 > ttable 2.060, it showed that there is significant effect by using cloze procedure technique towards students’
reading skill of recount text after the treatment done.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui ada atau tidaknya efek yang signifikan dari penggunaan cloze procedure terhadap kemampuan membaca teks recount siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain pre-eksperimental, yang juga disebut dengan desain satu grup pre-test dan post-test. Populasi yang dipilih dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 15 Tanjungpinang. Peneliti memilih kelas VIIIC dari seluruh siswa kelas delapan sebagai subjek dari penelitian ini. Teknik sampling yang digunakan oleh peneliti adalah cluster random sampling. Instrument penelitian ini adalah tes membaca.
Data dianalisis menggunakan perangkat lunak SPSS 21 Statistics.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata dari pretest adalah 58.46 dan nilai rata-rata dari posttest adalah 80.77, yang mengindikasikan bahwa nilai rata-rata posttest lebih baik dari nilai rata-rata posttest. Dengan tcount
7.994 > ttable 2.060, menunjukkan bahwa adanya efek yang signifikan dari penggunaan cloze procedure terhadap kemampuan membaca teks recount siswa setelah dilakukan treatment.
