The Role of Work Engagement as Mediator: Career Adaptability and Employee Well-Being for Tourism Industry Workers

ABSTRACT

One of the business sectors that was significantly negatively affected by the pandemic period was the tourism industry. The decline in income by companies resulted in massive reductions in employees resulting in changes to the working system for active workers such as changes in working time, reduced salaries, and increased workload. affect the condition of employee well-being in active workers in the tourism sector. This research determines whether work engagement has a role as a mediator of the relationship between career adaptability and employee well-being in tourism industry workers. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method. Samples in this study were 371 workers in the tourism industry in Jakarta. Instrument: The tools used in this study are Employee Well-Being Scale (EWB) measuring tool developed by Pradhan & Hati, Career Adapt-Abilities Scale-Short Form (CAAS-SF) developed by Maggiori, Rossier, and Savickas, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) developed by Scaufeli and Bakker. PROCESS V3.5 Procedure for SPSS from Andrew F. Hayes is used in this study to analyze the mediation regression process. This research shows that work engagement acts as a mediator of the relationship between Career Adaptability and Employee Well-Being, this indicates that career adaptability and employee well-being will increase with the role of work engagement. This research is expected to provide a reference for workers and companies in the tourism sector regarding the importance of understanding the values of career adaptability, work engagement and employee well-being so that they are able to understand the ability of workers to adapt to changes during the transition period in order to improve employee well-being conditions.
