Expanded Media faculty open 'Variantology' exhibition in Fosdick-Nelson Gallery 2/27/15

“Variantology,” a collaborative exhibition featuring work by faculty and staff from the Division of Expanded Media in the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, is on display in the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery, Harder Hall through Friday, April 3.

The public is welcome. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 1-3 p.m. The Gallery is closed during University holidays; the University will be on spring break March 6-15.

“ ‘Variantology& is a research model proposed by Dr. Siegfried Zielinski (a German media theorist) that aptly describes (albeit not exclusively) the approach of the faculty in Expanded Media to exploring new media,” explained Sharon McConnell, director of the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery. “ ‘Variantology& seeks to realign the cross connections between media art, science, technology, experimentalism, and international exchange in ways that will allow media experts to place their research in a broader perspective and disciplines that have not yet engaged these discourses will become receptive to media questions,” she said, noting the University is working on bringing Dr. Zielinski to campus while the show is up.

The exhibit includes work by Peer Bode, Xiaowen Chen, William Contino, Andrew Deutsch, Gerar Edizel, Devin Henry, Mark Klingensmith, Barbara Lattanzi, Judy Livingston, Joseph Scheer, Katherine Vajda, and Alex Williams and will include video projections, large-scale digital prints, painting, digital wood cut and screen prints, multi-channel video installation, graphic design, sonic art installation, and handmade books and zines.

Bode is professor of video art at AU. A nationally and internationally exhibiting artist, he is co-founder and co- director of the Institute for Electronic Arts (IEA) at the University.

Xiaowen Chen, professor of printmaking, has exhibited in Brooklyn and Santa Barbara as well as Beijing, China.
