1 A. Title

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING

UTILIZING THE INSHOT APPLICATION AS A LEARNING MEDIA TO ENHANCE THE DESCRIPTIVE TEXT WRITING SKILLS OF 10TH- GRADE VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.

B. Background Of The Research

The current era is the era of the industrial revolution, which emphasizes the utilization of digitalization. Whatever the form, it is undoubtedly packaged by digital technology. One of the factors of learning adjustment consists of several elements, and one of them is the instructional media that educators must understand, with the hope that the material is effectively delivered, beneficial, and useful. Irianti & Imroatu Julaikah (2018) state that the learning process has seen improvements, such as the existence of online learning, which is a manifestation of the utilization of digital technology, assisting educators and learners in conducting the learning process in different locations due to distance constraints.

According to Rivai (2015), the use of instructional media is expected to enhance the maximum learning outcomes.

This Inshot-based instructional media is created to support an interactive learning process. It stems from the complaints of several students at SMK Bakti Kencana when they were confused about what to incorporate in their writings during descriptive text lessons. In essence, the creative writing process differs for each individual, but in some similar cases where students feel uncertain about expressing their thoughts, they were assigned tasks to convey their perspectives on illustrated examples presented in the form of descriptive texts. As a result, they often find it more convenient to leave the task incomplete and prefer to ask someone more mature than to rely on their own work to provide insights regarding the presented brief description.

Basic competencies and core competencies serve as references in students' learning process to study descriptive texts. The stages for writing

(5)

a descriptive text include identifying the problem, determining the object, analyzing the text that has been created, and presenting the results of writing descriptive texts both orally and in writing.

C. Research Questions

Based on the background of the problem, the research issues in this study are formulated as follows.

1. How does the effectiveness of utilizing project-based learning with the assistance of the Inshot application in improving the skill of writing descriptive texts among 10th-grade vocational high school students manifest quantitatively?

2. How is the implementation of project-based learning aided by the Inshot application reflected in the response of 10th-grade vocational high school students regarding the improvement of their descriptive text writing skills?

3. What obstacles or difficulties do 10th-grade vocational high school students encounter in enhancing their ability to write descriptive texts when their learning utilizes project-based learning aided by the Inshot application?

D. Objectives of the Research

Based on the research questions, this study aims to identify and examine.

1. To quantitatively measure the effectiveness of using project-based learning aided by the Inshot application in improving the skill of writing descriptive texts among 10th-grade vocational high school students.

2. To investigate how the implementation of project-based learning assisted by the Inshot application influences the response of 10th-grade vocational high school students towards the improvement of their descriptive text writing skills.

3. To identify the obstacles and difficulties faced by 10th-grade vocational high school students in enhancing their ability to write descriptive texts

(6)

when their learning utilizes project-based learning aided by the Inshot application.

E. Significances of the research

The effectiveness of instructional media based on Inshot is expected to assist teachers in the teaching and learning process and serve as an alternative to enhancing the skill of writing descriptive texts among 10th- grade vocational high school students. The expectations of this research are as follows:

1. Teacher

For teachers, this media is expected to provide an alternative during the teaching and learning process. The engaging content presented by the Inshot-based instructional media can help students understand the descriptive text that will be expressed in written form.

2. Student

For students, this research can provide an active and easily understandable learning experience. By using Inshot-assisted instructional media, students will gain insights to enhance their writing skills, particularly in descriptive texts.

3. Researcher

For researchers, this study provides valuable experience, insights, and skills in utilizing Inshot-based instructional media.

F. Definitions Of Key Terms

Anything that can aid the learning process by stimulating the mind through specific tools or media applications that deliver messages to students can be referred to as instructional media. Each era brings forth its own characteristics, lifestyle, and learning methods, thus instructional media will continue to evolve according to the needs of the time.

Since instructional media has various active functions in every learning situation, it needs to be tailored to the teaching materials that measure the basic competencies so that the stimuli given to students can enhance their

(7)

understanding of the conveyed content and facilitate the process of expressing ideas in written form:

1. Problem Based Learning

The Problem-Based Learning research model is a research model in which meaningful problems serve as the foundation for students' investigations. Students develop investigative and problem-solving skills in this situation with the assistance of the Problem-Based Learning model. Writing skills are one of the effective and expressive language skills used for both indirect and direct communication with others. Writing skills are undoubtedly interconnected with other language skills. It is undeniable that writing skills have been implemented since elementary school education. Writing skills do not develop instantly; they require a learning process and practice.

Writing comes in various forms, not only fiction and non-fiction, but the most beneficial type of writing is the one that demonstrates continuous and logical thinking.

2. Descriptive Text

Descriptive text is defined as a descriptive paragraph or text that clearly and elaborately describes something. Descriptive text is one of the texts that students need to master. Descriptive text has also been introduced to students since elementary school. Generally, descriptive text is defined as a text that aims to describe an object based on its physical characteristics using valid data.

3. Inshot

Inshot is a video editing application that continues to evolve with the advancement of time. This innovative instructional media is supported by ICT and is highly beneficial in supporting teaching and learning activities. Inshot is designed with a user-friendly interface that is easy to use and understand. The material that has been adapted to

(8)

instructional materials can be presented in a captivating manner, resulting in a non-monotonous perspective for learners.

After careful consideration, instructional media utilizing the Inshot application can enhance the attractiveness of the presented learning material, thereby improving students' understanding, learning interest, and acceptance of the teacher's perspectives. Instructional media is becoming increasingly engaging, and with this appeal, students will gain a broader perspective to incorporate into their writing.

G. Literature Review

In this section, the researcher presents the theoretical basis that supports the paper.

1. Instructional Media

Instructional media refers to the tools, methods, and techniques used to enhance the teaching and learning process, facilitating effective communication between students and teachers (Tafonao, 2018). It encompasses various types and their corresponding definitions.

According to Prof. Dr. H. Wina Sanjaya (2012), instructional media principles can be outlined as follows:

a. Media is directed to facilitate learning.

b. Media is used to achieve instructional objectives.

c. Media is used in accordance with the instructional materials.

d. Media is used according to students' interests, needs, and conditions.

e. Media is used with consideration of effectiveness and efficiency in instruction.

f. Media should be used by educators who operate them.

These principles align with Rivai's (2015) criteria for selecting instructional media, which include alignment with teaching objectives, support for the subject matter content, ease of obtaining the media, teacher's

(9)

skills in using it, availability of time to use it, and alignment with students' thinking levels.

Understanding the characteristics and principles of instructional media is crucial for appropriate media selection to assist the learning process effectively.

2. Writing Descriptive Texts using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with Inshot Application

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is an innovative learning model that actively engages students in the learning environment (Nisa, 2013:3, in Rerung et al., 2017). It involves students in problem-solving through stages resembling the scientific method, enabling them to acquire knowledge and develop problem-solving skills (Utrifani A and Turnip M.

Betty, 2014, in Rerung et al., 2017).

a) Language Skills and Writing

In language acquisition, four primary language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—are recognized. Writing, the last skill in this sequence, is often considered the most challenging (Irianti & Imroatu Julaikah, 2018). According to Yunus (2019), writing ability is a person's skill in conveying thoughts, ideas, and feelings to others, profoundly influencing the reader.

b) Writing Descriptive Texts

Writing descriptive texts is a means of conveying information by expressing intentions through language. These texts elaborate on objects, places, or topics, aiming to provide clear explanations for the readers (Ekasari, 2020). Inshot, a user-friendly video editing application, facilitates educators in capturing teaching materials and presenting content in an engaging and appealing manner (Hafizatul, 2021).

(10)

Tarigan (2018) emphasizes that training language skills equates to training thinking skills, highlighting the importance of practice in mastering the skill of writing descriptive texts, as language mirrors thoughts and perspectives expressible in written form.

H. Method and Design of Research 1.) Method

The research method is a plan and research procedures which include steps of broad assumptions to detailed methods in collection, analysis, and interpretation data. (Creswell, 2016).

2.) Design

This research utilizes a mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design. In the quantitative phase, data is collected through questionnaires or tests from a sample representing the research population. The quantitative data is analyzed using statistical methods such as regression analysis or hypothesis testing. Subsequently, in the qualitative phase, data is collected through interviews, observations, or document analysis from a relevant sample.

The qualitative data is analyzed using thematic analysis or content analysis methods. The data from both methods are then integrated to gain a comprehensive understanding of the research topic. Findings from both methods are compared to identify convergence or differences. The results of the data analysis are used to interpret the findings as a whole, relating them to the theoretical framework and research questions.

This research provides detailed conclusions and offers practical implications and suggestions for further research. The mixed methods approach allows researchers to leverage the strengths of both quantitative and qualitative methods to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomena under investigation.
